Geography 3 month dry season temperature 120 degrees Africa second largest continent in area and population Sudan located in 3 separate regions of continent (The Sahara Desert, Savannah, and Great Rift Valley) Colonization European nations exploited Africa’s vast natural resources in the 16th century. -1562 England engaged in African slave trade -1884- 7 European nations divided Africa nation into 50 separate colonies. -1980 Zimbabwe last African nation to gain its independence from a European nation -Great Britain and France held most African colonies as of 1914.

Sudan entrenched in war since 1956 when it became an independent nation. Sudanese Civil War-

Statement- Salva’s teacher gave good advice when he told the boys to run into the bush. I agree that Salva’s teacher gave good advice when he told the boys to run into the bush. The teacher said “…they will be going into the villages…” The boys should go into the bush to stay safe and not get killed. Also, they would be able to hide safely there. In the book it said that everyone was shouting and running, and if they ran into the bush they would be okay. “and now the the war had come to where Salva had lived.”

SOS chapter 2 Salva will be better off alone. I disagree with the statement because just like it said in the book, Salva is only eleven and he won’t be safe all by himself in a country that’s having a civil war. He is also still very emotionally unstable not being with his family, “now he is all alone”. Also, so far in the book it seems Salva likes to have company, “…still it was comforting to see them.” I can tell Salva is nervous alone by himself because it says it took a long time “to fall asleep.” He is worried without anyone and especially without his family.

Salva’s teacher gave good advice when he told the boys to run into the bush. I agree that the teacher gave good advice when he told the boys to run into the bush. They said in the book, if they run home or to the villages the soldiers will be there, so it is safe to run into the bushes where they can’t see you. The boy, Salva wanted to go home and wanted to shout it, but when he looked out the door he saw kids and adults running, women running with babies, and soon he began to run too.

Statement of Inquiry Environments shape relationships between characters and their identities. Do Now: Please write your homework in your agenda. Then take out your Setting worksheet and continue working on it.

Gist Chapter 1- Salva is an 11 year old boy living in South Sudan in 1985. He must flee his school and run away from his village(his home) because the fighting was now where he lived. VIP- text evidence( to support gist) “…Not home. Don’t run home. They will be going into the villages. Stay away from the villages-run into the bush.”

Setting NYA -2008 VIP’s Southern Sudan “There was so rainy season much life around the pond.” (14) -Salva- 1985 Southern Sudan rainy season pg. 2 “during the rainy season he could walk to school.”

Text-Dependent Questions Chapter 4 Terrain is land. The land where Salva is walking is very harsh: there isn’t much to eat. The trees are changing from little bushes to bigger “woods.” There are groups of trees that aren’t growing very well. Some fruit was growing, but it wasn’t ripe. It is getting harder and harder for Salva. Later the author says that Salva had never been so hungry and that “nothing was real except his hunger.”
