Measurement

Why do we care?  In order for measurement to be useful, a measurement standard must be used.

These units can measure time, temperature, mass, volume, length, etc Measurement Standard In science we use SI Units (Systeme Internationale) as our standard. A standard is – an exact quantity that people agree to use for comparison. These units can measure time, temperature, mass, volume, length, etc

SI Units Gram (g) Meter (m) Kelvin (k) Second (s) Liter (L) • SI Unit for Mass ___________________________________ • SI Unit for Length __________________________________ • SI Unit for Temperature _____________________________ • SI Unit for Time ____________________________________ • Common Unit for Volume _____________________________ Meter (m) Kelvin (k) Second (s) Liter (L)

More on Time & Temperature We will be working on measuring length, mass, and volume in upcoming lessons. Time (seconds) – The interval between events. A stopwatch or clock measure time. Temperature (kelvin) – Measures the heat energy of an object. A thermometer measures temperature Did you know? “Cold” does not actually exist Did you know? Time is NOT constant

What the heck is “Kelvin” Absolute Zero Why “Kelvin”? What the heck is “Kelvin” 0 K is absolute zero! Heat makes molecules move. At 0 (zero) K, all molecules are completely still. No heat energy is present! Fun with Liquid Nitrogen

How do you convert Celsius to Kelvin??? • To convert Celsius to Kelvin you simply add 273. □ 10 °C = __________K □ 48 °C = __________K □ 326 °C = __________K 283 321 599 • To convert Kelvin to Celsius you simply subtract 273. □ 273 K = __________°C □ 380 K = __________°C □ 10 K = __________°C 107 -263

More on Measurement Scientists work with very large numbers and very small numbers. They use something called “scientific notation” to avoid using measurements like… 93,000,000,000,000,000 units .000029300018283000003 units If you measured this way, LOTS of ERRORS would occur. So, scientists convert by bases of 10…. 8

The Magical Metric Staircase 1000 Kilo (K) 1 kilogram = 1000 grams grams king Hecto (H) 100 1 hectogram = 100 grams grams henry 10 Deca (da) 1 decagram = 10 grams grams died 1 gram = 1 gram 1 Base (B) Base = grams, meters, etc by .1 1 decigram = .1 grams Deci (D) grams drinking 1 centigram = .01 grams .01 Centi (C) grams chocolate 1 milligram = .001 grams .001 Milli (M) grams milk

How to CONVERT The Magical Metric Staircase 1000 . Kilo (K) . Hecto (H) 100 10 . Deca (D) 1 . Base (B) grams .1 Deci (D) .01 Centi (C) ALL numbers have a decimal. First, find the decimal. .001 Milli (M)

A blue whale is 3100 centimeters long… A blue whale is 3100 centimeters long….is there an easier way to tell the length than saying 3100 centimeters?

Example: A blue whale is 3100 centimeters long… Example: A blue whale is 3100 centimeters long….is there an easier way to tell the length than saying 3100 centimeters? 1000 Kilo (Km) 100 3100. cm = _______ m 31.00 Hecto (Hm) 310.0 dm 10 Deca (Dm) 31.00 m meters 1 Base (B) .1 Deci (Dm) Move the decimal LEFT if converting up. Move the decimal RIGHT if converting down. .01 Centi (Cm) .001 Milli (Mm)

Example: A tiny amoeba is. 0004 m long Example: A tiny amoeba is .0004 m long. Is there an easier way to give the length of the amoeba? 1000 Kilo (K) .0004 m = ______ mm .4 Hecto (H) 100 0.004 dm 10 Deca (D) 00.04 cm .4 mm meter 1 Base (B) .1 Deci (D) Move the decimal LEFT if converting up. Move the decimal RIGHT if converting down. .01 Centi (C) .001 Milli (M)

Google Earth The distance from Holley to Lake Ontario is 16576.2 meters…..is there an easier way to tell the distance?

Example: The distance from Holley to Lake Ontario is 16576. 2 meters… Example: The distance from Holley to Lake Ontario is 16576.2 meters…..is there an easier way to tell the distance? 1000 Kilo (K) 100 16576.2 m = _______km 16.5762 Hecto (H) 1657.62 dam 10 Deca (D) 165.762 hm meters 1 Base (B) 16.5762 km .1 Deci (D) Move the decimal LEFT if converting up. Move the decimal RIGHT if converting down. .01 Centi (C) .001 Milli (M)
