Disability Awareness Training introduction

Outcomes of the today To have an understanding of Disability To identify barriers to participation in clubs and how to overcome them To understand our obligations as part of the Equality act

Dictionary Definition Disabled: unable to perform particular activities: describes somebody with a condition that makes it difficult to perform some or all of the basic tasks of daily life unable to operate: incapable of performing or functioning physically challenged people: people who are physically challenged Source: Oxford dictionary

Understanding Disability Disabled by society, not impairment

Understanding Disability Society presumes that disabled people cannot do something because of their impairment. In reality, it is environmental and attitudinal barriers that cause greater problems than impairments. Talk through this slide

Making It Happen List all your concerns around making an inclusive club How to over come these concerns- try and list how you think you can overcome these In groups get them to come up with a list of what the main concerns are and how they think as a club we can overcome them

Make It Happen Access to venues Specialist Coaching Safety Specialist Equipment Legal requirements (Equality act/data protection) Integration Lack of Knowledge (coaches and Members) These should eb some of the concerns but this is not exclusive

Language and Terminology Language used should be: appropriate sensitive relevant consistent. Is it derogatory, or is the receiver or anyone else in the group offended? Highlight that we should not get caught up in this, explain disabled person vs person with a disability

What We Can Do Training and support for coaches Asking for as much detail from members Have a dedicated welfare person for disabled people Have a member who others coming to the club can approach Do FAQ’s for the website Put accessibility information on web site so those wanting to join know which venue is best Don’t make any assumptions Ask the disabled person about their disability, about their needs Check against the lists the groups made
