What do all of these jobs have in common?

Date: Title: Careers By the end of the lesson, I will be able to: Produce an application for your dream job. Explore the different routes English can lead you down. Understand why we study English in school

How do these careers use English? Computer programmer Doctors and Nurses Police Engineer Plumber Teachers Architect

Why is English so important? Filling in an application form for a job… Good for your mental health! Increases your chances of going to FE. Writing a covering letter to go with the application… Sending a text… Completing a report on a particular job you have done. Listening skills… Using analytical skills as part of your job role. Sending emails to colleagues. Reading! Filling in an application form for a job… Communicating with friends/colleagues/employees

Having a GCSE in English will open doors for you… Leave school with GCSEs You need to get a 5 at GCSE to pass… IF YOU DO NOT PASS YOUR GCSE ENGLISH AT THE END OF YEAR ELEVEN, YOU WILL HAVE TO RESIT IT AT COLLEGE – EVEN IF YOU ARE DOING AN APPRENTICESHIP!!! Is it really worth having to redo your entire GCSE just because you ‘couldn’t be bothered’ or you ‘don’t care about English’ or because ‘it’s boring’…complaining is futile – you have to do it!!! Sixth Form – Academic A levels Apprenticeship – Vocational NVQ BTEC Some employers may allow you to go onto higher level Qualifications EG HNC Gain A Levels Some employers may allow you to go onto complete a degree Degree Level Apprenticeship University Paid Tradesman Highly Paid Career (hopefully)

What skills will you need to do that job? What is your dream job? What would you like to do when you leave school? What skills will you need to do that job? What qualifications might you need? What qualities should you have to do that job? How will that job use English? Complete the application form for your dream job. Accurate SPAG. Clear paragraphing where appropriate. Formal language needs to be used. Now write a covering letter to go with your application form. Remember, you need to use the formal letter layout.

Alternative Tasks Write an advert for one of the following ‘ Dream jobs’. Remember to use Persuasive writing skills (AFORREST) Manager of S.A.F.C FIFA Game designer Veterinary Surgeon Vlogger Head Teacher

In groups, share your dream job and swap forms with someone. Think from the perspective of an employer – would you hire this person based on their application form? What do they prove through it?
