Characters Christopher Sly: drunkard thrown out of an ale house Bartholomew: the drunkard’s “wife” Lucentio: in “love” with Bianca; later elopes with Bianca Tranio: disguised as Lucentio (his master); only servant pretending to be a master Cambio: tutor that gains the love of Bianca Hortensio: first suitor/tutor to be rejected by Bianca Litio: was introduced to Batista as a tutor by Petruchio Petruchio: late for his own wedding; becomes a shrew to Kate Grumio: Petruchio’s servant Baptista: father of Kate and Bianca; offers to double Kate’s dowry Pedant: disguises himself as Vincentio Kate: the “tamed” shrew Bianca: stock character—young woman who is enduringly innocent and wholesome Widow: married Hortensio

Important Information to Remember Induction: a lord plays a trick on a drunkard for amusement. Know Bianca’s suitors: all three of them Batista’s rule for his daughter's marriages Who band together to find a suitor for Katerina? Petruchio’s reason for coming to Padua? Be able to recognize puns—play on words (i.e. "Let's be no stoics nor no stocks..." (1.1, L. 31)--emotionless people) Hortensio and Lucentio disguise themselves as what kind of teachers?
