What Love Is NOT!

Uses of the word LOVE in the Bible! Love Defined

Not Used In The New Testament! Different Words For Love! Eros - Sexual love The word “erotic” comes from this! Not Used In The New Testament! Love Defined

Not Used In The New Testament! Different Words For Love! Stergein - Familial love Not Used In The New Testament! Love Definded

Different Words For Love! Phileo - More nearly represents tender affection! This word is never used in a command to love God’s word! This love is not given without expectation! This love usually expects the same coming back in return! Love Defined

Love Defined Different Words For Love! It is to Love the Unlovable! Agapao - Largely translated as “love” 2nd most common translation in KJV is "charity" (Esp. 1 Cor. 13)! This kind of love is unnatural to man! It is a love that must be learned and is commanded! It is a love given without expectation and it denotes and demands a total commitment! Jn. 3:16 There are no conditions, no strings attached! It always seeks the good of it’s object! It is to Love the Unlovable! Love Defined

1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing. 4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; 5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; 6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 1 Corinthians 13:1-7

8 Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part. 10 But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away. 11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. 12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. 13 And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love. 1 Corthinans 13:8-13

Actions alone are not Love! All our works must be done with love as the basis! Jesus gave us the Example of love! John 3:16 1 John 4:7-14 Actions alone are not Love!

Love is NOT puffed up! “is not puffed up” – vs. 4 “feeling self-important; arrogant; pompous.” “To be full of pride.” Paul condemned this among Christians 1 Cor. 4:6, 18-19; 5:2 Col. 2:18 The proud fail! Proverbs 16:18; Luke 14:11 Indicates lack of humbleness! James 4:10 Love is NOT puffed up!

Love does NOT behave rudely! “does not behave…unseemly” – vs. 5 “discourteous or impolite, especially in a deliberate way: a rude reply” Christ was never rude! He was firm and spoke forthrightly! Matt 23. Rudeness is the opposite of kindness! Kindness commanded by Paul – Eph. 4:32 Kindness is a “work of the Spirit”! Gal. 5:22 Love does NOT behave rudely!

Love does not seek its own! “seeketh not her own” – vs. 5 Christ did not seek His own interest! Phil. 2:1-11 Paul had the mind of Christ Phil. 1:21-26 He sought the spiritual welfare of the Philippians So must we! 1 Peter 5:5 Love does not seek its own!

Will bear afflictions or persecutions that come To conceal in the sense as used by Peter 1 Peter 4:9 Does not delight in revealing the sins and short comings of others! Not a gossip nor a tattletale. Love does NOT reveal or yield!

Love does NOT yield to suspicion! “Believeth all things, hopeth all things” – vs. 7 To give one “the benefit of the doubt” Believes the best if no evidence to the contrary! But, not gullible – can discern good and evil! Looks and hopes for the best in people! Does not yield to “evil surmisings” 1 Tim. 6:4 Love does NOT yield to suspicion!

We will fail if we don’t have the “agape” love! Faith and Hope must abide and continue! LOVE is the Greatest and must be the Foundation and Basis of these! Love does NOT fail!
