And Other Teacher Moves to Reach 100% Compliance in the Classroom THE DISCO FINGER And Other Teacher Moves to Reach 100% Compliance in the Classroom Giving directions, then looking at notes. What might happen?

Introduction to 100% What is 100%? Purpose and rationale MTLD Introductions Chris Jenn Introduction to 100% Great teachers ensure that 100 percent of students are with them for every part of the teaching and learning Great classroom managers generally address distractions earlier, but in a seamless way You probably chose this jam session because you already understand and value the concept of 100% in the classroom. We think this session is especially important right now because strong classroom management and a clear vision of the high expectations you want for students will set your school year up for success. We hope that by the end of this session you will leave with concrete tools and actions you can take to reach 100% Introduction  Visible Directions  Radar/Be Seen Looking  Practice  Closing

100% Radar/Be Seen Looking Making Compliance Visible Least Invasive Intervention Firm Calm Finesse Art of the Consequence In Teach Like a Champion, 100% is broken up into a 5 part cycle Radar/Be Seen Looking Making Compliance Visible Least Invasive Intervention Firm Calm Finesse Art of the Consequence Introduction  Visible Directions  Radar/Be Seen Looking  Practice  Closing

100% Radar/Be Seen Looking Making Compliance Visible Least Invasive Intervention Firm Calm Finesse Art of the Consequence Because this is only a 45 minutes session, we will be focusing just on the first two parts of the cycle If you want information about the other 3 parts, we have copies of that section of TLAC available here. Feel free to grab one at the end of the session! Introduction  Visible Directions  Radar/Be Seen Looking  Practice  Closing

Awareness Test https://vimeo.com/groups/263212/videos/102641271 Before we begin talking about the components of 100%, we’re going to watch this video. If you’ve already seen this, please don’t give away the answers to the other participants!! This video shows us that we don’t see what we don’t look for. After giving good explicit directions and expectations, we need to follow through and look explicitly to making sure every student is with us because if don’t we are sending the message that we either don’t care about the directions we gave or that it doesn’t matter if students follow what the teacher says. Introduction  Visible Directions  Radar/Be Seen Looking  Practice  Closing

Visible Directions An observable direction makes it more likely for students to do what you’ve asked and easier for you to hold them accountable. ”If you can see it, you can manage it.” You should be writing.  I want to see your pencils moving. When you are done writing, wait silently.  When you are done writing, put your pencils down and begin reading your book. You try! Visible Directions Push your MVP directions one step further to add a visible component An observable direction makes it more likely for students to know/follow expectations and easier for you to hold them accountable “If you can see it, you can manage it” Examples Instead of saying “You should be writing” you can say “I want to see your pencils moving” “When you are done writing, wait silently” could be “When you are done writing, put your pencils down and begin reading your book” The visible component could also be an engagement and momentum builder! You try! With a partner, you have 2 minutes to change the original direction to a visible direction. Remember that longer is not necessarily better and that the more visible the direction, the easier it is to track. MTLDs monitor work! 3 minute share out! Introduction  Visible Directions  Radar/Be Seen Looking  Practice  Closing

Radar After giving a direction or during an activity, scan the room for compliance. “Swivel” Plant yourself strategically to swivel! Teach Like a Champion 2.0 Radar First step to preventing nonproductive behavior is to consistently it! Create the “eyes on the back of your head” vibe Make it a habit to “swivel” Strategic position in the classroom Front and center requires ~150 degrees of swiveling Pastore’s Perch requires ~80 degrees of swiveling Introduction  Visible Directions  Radar/Be Seen Looking  Practice  Closing

Be Seen Looking “Dance Moves” From Teach Like a Champion: The Invisible Column The Tiptoes The Sprinkler The Disco Finger The Politician The QB Radar is seeing well, Be Seen Looking is subtly reminding students that you see Be Seen Looking Dance Moves Ask for 6 readers, number them After each read, MTLD shows 2 second model of the dance move Introduction  Visible Directions  Radar/Be Seen Looking  Practice  Closing

See it in action! https://vimeo.com/groups/263212/videos/102640564 Doesn’t need to be super exaggerated! Introduction  Visible Directions  Radar/Be Seen Looking  Practice  Closing

Rehearsal Protocol – 3 min per CM Practicing CM rehearses MVP directions, using a teacher move to look for compliance and reinforces with 2-3 positive narrations Feedback CMs provide quick hits feedback (1 positive and 1 constructive to incorporate for next practice) Practicing CM rehearses again incorporating the feedback Rehearsal Protocol Groups of 4 Use directions from Visible Directions portion of packet, or a direction you know you will give to students on Day 1. 1 minute rehearsal, 1 minute feedback, 1 minute re-rehearsal Use handout to help with feedback MTLD models CMs start rehearsal protocol Assign a timer MTLD gives time reminders every 3 minutes After 12 minutes, bring group together. If time, have a CM try in front of whole group! Introduction  Visible Directions  Radar/Be Seen Looking  Practice  Closing
