TGu Requirements Change Motion 02/02/2019 doc.: IEEE 802.11-06/0xxxr0 May 2006 TGu Requirements Change Motion Date: 2006-05-15 Authors: Notice: This document has been prepared to assist IEEE 802.11. It is offered as a basis for discussion and is not binding on the contributing individual(s) or organization(s). The material in this document is subject to change in form and content after further study. The contributor(s) reserve(s) the right to add, amend or withdraw material contained herein. Release: The contributor grants a free, irrevocable license to the IEEE to incorporate material contained in this contribution, and any modifications thereof, in the creation of an IEEE Standards publication; to copyright in the IEEE’s name any IEEE Standards publication even though it may include portions of this contribution; and at the IEEE’s sole discretion to permit others to reproduce in whole or in part the resulting IEEE Standards publication. The contributor also acknowledges and accepts that this contribution may be made public by IEEE 802.11. Patent Policy and Procedures: The contributor is familiar with the IEEE 802 Patent Policy and Procedures <http:// ieee802.org/guides/bylaws/sb-bylaws.pdf>, including the statement "IEEE standards may include the known use of patent(s), including patent applications, provided the IEEE receives assurance from the patent holder or applicant with respect to patents essential for compliance with both mandatory and optional portions of the standard." Early disclosure to the Working Group of patent information that might be relevant to the standard is essential to reduce the possibility for delays in the development process and increase the likelihood that the draft publication will be approved for publication. Please notify the Chair <stuart.kerry@philips.com> as early as possible, in written or electronic form, if patented technology (or technology under patent application) might be incorporated into a draft standard being developed within the IEEE 802.11 Working Group. If you have questions, contact the IEEE Patent Committee Administrator at <patcom@ieee.org>. Necati Canpolat, Intel Corporation Necati Canpolat, Intel Corp.

Motion for changing TGu requirements 02/02/2019 doc.: IEEE 802.11-06/0xxxr0 May 2006 Abstract Motion for changing TGu requirements Necati Canpolat, Intel Corporation Necati Canpolat, Intel Corp.

02/02/2019 doc.: IEEE 802.11-06/0xxxr0 May 2006 Why Change? At the IEEE March 2006 meeting, some 802.11 WG members expressed concerns on the requirements and scope of TGu. After discussions, TGu members agreed to review TGu requirements and scope to address the concerns. Hence, this submission contains some suggested changes to TGu requirements in response to concerns raised during the IEEE March 2006 meeting. Online Enrolment Cluster Requirements 02/02/2019 doc.: IEEE 802.11-06/0xxxr0 May 2006 Online Enrolment Cluster Requirements R10E1 “Define functionality by which the STA is able to determine what online enrolment (also called online subscription) methods are supported by the local network.” <required> R10E2 “Define functionality for online enrolment.” <optional> “ … has been marked as optional as it is expected that a solution may be outside the scope of this task group.” R10E4 “Functionality shall be provided by which Aps can advertise (before connection) the charges that will be made for use of the network if a user enrolls with it.” <optional> “While in principle most people would like this to be possible, there are a significant number of people who doubt that a practical and consistent mechanism can be defined. For this reason the group has marked it as optional – they are open to proposals in this area. ” R10E5 “Define a way in which the functionality defined in requirement R10E1 can be extended to support enrolment with SSPNs.” <optional> “It is expected to be much more challenging to define a mechanism for enrolment with remote networks. ” Necati Canpolat, Intel Corporation Necati Canpolat, Intel Corp.

Online Enrolment Cluster May 2006 Online Enrolment Cluster R10E1 is the only required item in the “Online Enrolment Cluster” The remaining items are optional due to questions on the practicality and known difficulties to define any mechanism within TGu. R10E1 is very closely related to “Network Selection” and it could be merged with “Network Selection Cluster” requirements. Necati Canpolat, Intel Corporation

02/02/2019 doc.: IEEE 802.11-06/0xxxr0 May 2006 Motion Move to direct the TGu Editor to merge “Online Enrolment Cluster” item R10E1 into “Network Selection Cluster” and remove the remaining optional items R10E2, R10E4 and R10E5 in TGu Requirements doc 05/0822r10. Proposed: Seconded: Result (for/against/abstain): Necati Canpolat, Intel Corporation Necati Canpolat, Intel Corp.

May 2006 Protection Cluster Many TGu members consider Requirements in Protection Cluster would be very difficult to implement & not useful for the effort. Many people are concerned that it would break current network monitoring, diagnostics, management tools and create a lot of problems. It is not a problem limited to 802.11, but it would rather involve other 802 groups including 802.16, 802.15 etc. Any solution for the protection cluster should be driven at a higher level group. Necati Canpolat, Intel Corporation

02/02/2019 doc.: IEEE 802.11-06/0xxxr0 May 2006 Motion Move to direct the editor to remove “Protection Cluster” in TGu Requirements doc 05/0822r10. The document will then be updated to r11.
