Relationships and Sex Education Marcus Cooper Primary Adviser SDBE The SDBE Developing Church of England Education

DfE Draft requirements In schools with a religious character, the distinctive faith perspective on relationships may be taught, and balanced debate may take place about issues that are seen as contentious. The SDBE Developing Church of England Education

The Context Relationships and Sex Education forms part of the new Inspection Framework This piece of work follows a request from colleagues on the SDHTA A story of two halves; written guidance and face-to-face training

The written guidance The written guidance will; be approximately 15 pages long, clear and concise. provide a clear and visual ‘route map to the implementation of RSE’ which links to the C of E Vision. draw upon and link to all other key reports and documents. For example, the SIAMS Evaluation Schedule, Valuing All God’s Children, Mental Health and Well Being, Fruit of The Spirit, Developing Character Education, etc. highlight practical approaches to the implementation of the RSE (this will then link with the delivery in school in the wider context, e.g. science and PHSE, so RSE is not seen in silos).

The written guidance cont. provide clarity on the legal position with regards what is mandatory, and what is optional. This will be consistent with ‘flourishing and life in all its fullness’. ‘merge’ DfE requirements and C of E approach so schools know they are meeting the expectations of both. (In the style of the C of E mental health guidance) include guidance to schools on effective strategies to engage parents include a policy framework or model to be included within the document to support effective implementation. include online safety guidance and where schools are able to seek support and to minimize potential risk.

Face to face training A half day training course will be offered to all schools. The training will: support school leaders with practical approaches to the effective implementation of RSE. be led by colleagues from Herts for Learning and will sit outside of the partnership agreement. Provisional dates: Friday 22nd March – morning and afternoon sessions Tuesday 2nd April – morning and afternoon sessions
