What is Mental Health?

Look at this tree. What parts of the tree can’t you see?

Feelings Thoughts This is Felix. What can we see? What are the things that are hidden under the surface? Feelings Thoughts We call this our mental health and we all have mental health

Are Felix’s thoughts and feelings always the same? How do they change? Our mental health is in a constant state of change – sometimes we feel good and sometimes we feel low. We call this riding the ups and downs – this is normal.

Smoothing the Path Using the 5 Ways to Wellbeing, what could Felix do to ‘smooth the path’, to help look after his mental health?

Sometimes people have problems with their mental health (their thoughts and feelings). Can we always tell if people are struggling with their mental health? No Like the tree, our mental health might be hidden under the surface What can we do to help support the people around us?

Whole School Challenge Take notice of your own mood and the mood of others What can you do to be kind to yourself? What can you do to be kind to others? Make a collection of the kindness being shown in your school community Display your ideas to help inspire others
