2013 Salthawk Team Meeting

Why are we here? To become part of the Salthawk Team! To figure out our role on the team Educate ourselves on what athletes need from us Discounted tickets!!!

Becoming Part of the Salthawk Team! All Sports Booster Club Membership $20 membership fee Committee Membership Fundraising Efforts Financial Support

Parent Groups – Help with snacks – Plan team meals – Help coaches organize fundraising efforts

What is my role There are 4 roles that exist in any athletic contest… 1.Spectator 2.Official 3.Competitor 4.Coach

Role as Parents/Spectators Before – Goals/Expectations – Realize that participation is their thing – Release them to the game

RED Flags Continue to take credit for their success (We) Try to solve problems before they have problems Continue to coach when they know more than we do Avoid you or are embarrassed after a game You suffer with losses and celebrate more with wins than they do If your spouse or friends wont sit with you If you catch yourself yelling at a coach or official during a game

During – Focus on the Team – Allow them to focus on the coach – One instructional voice – Model appropriate behavior…Poise and confidence – Be proud of them regardless of playing time or how the game is going

After – Tell your child you enjoyed watching them play – Give your athlete time and space – Dont analyze their performance – Be proud of them regardless of playing time or how the game ended

Parent-Coach Relationship Communication from the Coach 1.Philosophy 2.Expectations for the team and your child 3.Practice and game information 4.Team goals/expectation 5.Travel procedures

Communication from the Parent 1.Notification of schedule conflicts 2.Specific concerns with expectations 3.Concerns are expressed directly to the coach 4.Immediately following a game is generally not a productive meeting time (24 Hour Rule)

Concerns to Discuss with Coach 1.Ways to help your child improve 2.Concerns about your childs behavior 3.Students mental or physical treatment

Concerns Not Appropriate to Discuss with Coach 1.Playing Time 2.Team Strategy 3.Play Calling 4.Other Student Athletes

What Athletes Need From You Take time to attend games Let the successes and failures be theirs Understand why they play Make friends with other parents Dont talk negatively about officials, other players, parents or coaches Allow them to take risks Release them to the coaches and the game Love them unconditionally
