Digital Footprints By: Andrew Wang September 25th, 2015
What is a digital footprint? A history of what you have posted on the internet What you’ve done online What others post about you online
How might your digital footprint now affect your future opportunities? If you leave bad digital footprints, they will be traced back to you when you’re trying to get a job or when you want to enter a good university or if you want to graduate. For example, employers will check out their applicants online like search up their name on google and look at their social media accounts for anything inappropriate.
Strategy #1 To Keep Your Digital Footprint Appropriate and Safe Control what type of social media you have because the less accounts you have, the less risk there is that you’re going to post something inappropriate on it. Also delete accounts that you don’t use anymore to minimize the risk that someone will hack into it or find out that you don’t use it anymore so they can take advantage of it.
Strategy #2 Think before you post. Everybody should think before they post something on social media sites because one, day your post might haunt you back when you’re trying to apply for jobs. Also if you don’t have anything nice to say or post, try not to.
Strategy #3 To keep your digital footprint safe, you should never give out your passwords of you accounts to other people. Exposing your password to others could result in you not being able to control what goes on in your digital life anymore.
What info did I learn and what would I pass on to others about it? I learned that digital footprints can have a very big impact on your life and what you think you deleted might not actually be because there will always be someone tracking you down. I would tell everybody to be self conscious whenever they’re on social media because you could be the one seeing something sensational on it and all of a sudden, you start posting things that you don’t even mean. These things could be good or harmful to your own future so I would again, recommend that everybody thinks thoroughly before they post.
