Chapter 5 Exploring Loyalties

Questions to Consider What are contending loyalties? What challenges arise from having contending nationalist loyalties? What challenges arise from having contending non- nationalist loyalties? What challenges arise from having contending global loyalties?

What is Loyalty? What do we think of when we think of loyalty? We can be loyal to people or to causes. Where does loyalty to one’s nation fit in? Who are some people we are loyal to? What are some causes we are loyal to? Are there different degrees of loyalty, and how do we determine them?

When Loyalties Conflict What happens when we hold multiple loyalties that come in to conflict? Brainstorm some everyday examples of where our loyalties could come into contention? Do these situations require that these conflicts of loyalty be reconciled? How do we reconcile these contentions?

Nationalism and Loyalty Nationalism requires loyalty. Loyalties to different nationalistic ideals are, therefore, prone to conflict. How might hyphenated identities create conflicts of loyalty? Why is this potential problem particularly relevant to Canada?

Conflicting Loyalties in Canada French Canadians (Language Loyalties, rise of the ADQ, military loyalty) Aboriginal Canadians (Meech Lake Accord, loyalty to the land, Inuit issues) Other conflicts (religious, regional, moral/conscientious, global, humanitarian)

Loyalties of French Canadians Language loyalties p 102 Bill 101- Making French the language of government and the law, work, instruction, business in Quebec. ADQ Party p 104 Rise in popularity. 2007 election results. Québec separatism. Military Loyalty p 105 Conscription crisis of 1917.

Loyalties of Aboriginal Canadians Meech Lake Accord p 107 About more than French rights and status. The Dene People Struggle for self-determination. Inuit Perspectives Loyalty to the land and environment. Changes in lifestyle (technology, economy) and resulting conflicts.

Other Conflicts of Loyalty Dual Citizenship Should MP’s be able to hold multiple citizenships? How does this result in conflicting loyalties? Religious Loyalties p 113 Does the Charter complicate matters in Canada? Hutterites and driver's licenses.

Other Conflicts of Loyalty Cont’d Conscientious Objectors/Ethical Conflicts Mennonites and military service/taxes Regional Loyalties p 115 Fort McMurray and Easterners Where are you from? Do you hold loyalties to that place? What about local loyalties, among different schools, for example?

Global Loyalties International Organizations p 116 Environmentalism Oxfam and Doctors Without Borders Environmentalism Greenpeace and World Wildlife Fund Alberta’s economy vs. the environment? Humanitarianism Should human beings ever be sacrificed for a purpose? Issues in Haiti

Concluding Thoughts In light of what we have discussed, think again about what your loyalties are? Do they come into conflict? If so, do they need to be reconciled? How might you do this?
