Focus – World I Who is the best character in Mulan? Discuss.

Everyone’s Favorite Day! DBQ Day Everyone’s Favorite Day!

Schedule for the DBQ Read through documents Day 1 (Today) Day 2 (Next class) Read through documents Analyze documents & take notes on them. Write outline (Mr. Michel must check it). Write Rough Draft (optional) if necessary. Get rough draft checked Do peer review with a partner

Some advice… Do not forget POV and contextualization in your DBQ. I am only asking you to include one POV this time, so it shouldn’t be that difficult. For POV, answer these questions: What is the historical context influencing this person? What is the author’s purpose in writing this document? Be very careful with your categories for this DBQ. They don’t fit quite as nicely in GSPRITE as other ones we have done so far. You may have to wait to figure out your categories until you have finished reading through all of them.

Approaching this DBQ What are the similarities between the responses? What are the differences between the responses? Break down those similarities and differences into categories to get your three paragraphs. Don’t try to fit your topics into (1) similarities and (2) differences because you will be left with a missing third topic.

Checklist for Document Analysis Before you do anything, figure out what the question is that the DBQ is asking. Who is the source & time period (make sure to figure out whether it is a Christian or Muslim source)? What is the main idea of the document? Under what category(ies) does this document belong? Which other documents can you compare or contrast with this? What is the Point of View of this document (I am only requiring one POV for this essay)?

Vocab Pitiless: Without pity or mercy Iniquities: Shortcomings or faults Penance: acts to gain forgiveness Abhorrent: awful, evil, disgusting Miasma: an evil air that causes disease Fumigate: use chemicals to rid a space of infection Depraved: evil and twisted Contrite: seeking forgiveness Stipend: payment

DBQ Checklist Does your thesis clearly answer the question: how different were Christian and Muslim responses to the Black Death? Are you using your documents correctly? (8 documents; at least 2 different documents per category) Cite & explain information: “Paraphrase your text (Doc. #).” Analyze the document Compare to other documents Did you include POV? (Not simply bias; go beyond that concept) What is the historical context that influenced the author? What is the author’s purpose in writing the document? Did you include contextualization? Intro: what was happening before this time period? Conclusion: what happened later?

World History I Announcements Your DBQ should be finished by the end of the block. If it is not, it is due by the beginning of next class (Tuesday). Bring brackets to class on Tuesday. We will see who your class chose as the winner. Bring your textbooks in Thursday. We will take a field trip to the book room that day. If you’ve already handed yours in, that’s great.
