Function Notation and Evaluating Functions Algebra 1 CC Function Notation and Evaluating Functions
You have seen linear functions written in the form y = mx + b You have seen linear functions written in the form y = mx + b. By naming a function f, you can write it using function notation: f(x) = mx + b. f(x) is read “f of x”. You can also think of the notation as the value of the function at x.
Example 1 What is the value of the function f(x) = 0.3x – 1.2 when x = 2?
Example 2 What is the value of the function when x = -2?
Example 3 Evaluate the function when x = -6, 0, and 4. g(x) = -5x2 + 9
Example 4 For the function h(x) = 5x – 3, find the value of x so that h(x) = 17.
Example 5 Find the value of x so that the function has the given value p(x) = 7.4x – 16; 43.2
Example 6 Find the value of x given f(x) = 19 f(x) = 8x – 5
