Unit A Driver’s Role and Responsibilities YOUR ROLE AS A SCHOOL BUS DRIVER School bus drivers play a vital role in today’s school system Safe: affording safety or security from danger, risk, or difficulty Orderly: well behaved and composed Efficient: productive without waste

Unit A Driver’s Role and Responsibilities You are a dominant figure in the life of a student; you are the first to see the students in the morning and often the last to see them at night. The bus driver is an important person, not only to each student passenger, but also to the school division. Discussion Question: How important is the school bus driver to the school system? What responsibilities does a school bus driver have?

How does positive communication influence the student’s attitude?

Unit A Driver’s Role and Responsibilities Responsibility to Parents Discussions with parents should be conducted in a calm and professional manner. Impress upon parents the bus stop times. Be on time, be courteous, and be cooperative. Exhibit concern for the safety practicing good and proper driving habits. Be receptive to parents’ and students’ suggestions. Advise parents that the safety of the busload is paramount. Explain to the parents the school board’s policy. Seek assistance from school officials to help solve problems. Discussion: Discuss what the local policies are regarding interaction and communication between the driver and the parent.

Unit A Driver’s Role and Responsibilities Responsibility To the Public The School Bus The School Bus is purposely the most visible aspect of our public educational system. You are highly visible. The image people have of you influences their opinion of the school system itself. Discussion: What does the high visibility of school buses and drivers mean to the school division?

Unit A Driver’s Role and Responsibilities Responsibility to Yourself Get adequate rest Have an adequate diet Monitor any health issues Follow all safe practices Follow all policies Plan ahead when making other commitments Wear appropriate attire for task and working conditions You have a safety sensitive job.
