Welcome John Doe

If It’s Lonely at the Top, You’re Not Doing Something Right Loneliness is not a leadership or positional issue, it is a personality issue. Avoid positional thinking.

The toughest person to lead is yourself Only leaders who have followed well know how to lead others well. Learn Followership

Defining Moments Define Your Leadership Ground breakers Heart breakers Cloud breakers Chart breakers Ground breakers take you into an area you haven’t been before Heart breakers are when you realize things are going very well Cloud breakers let you soar like you’ve never soared before Chart breakers take you beyond your expectations Experience is no teacher unless you learn from it. Focus not on what happens to you but on what happens in you during the process of the experience. At every defining moment, ask yourself one question: What did you learn?

When You Get Kicked in the Rear, You Know You’re Out in Front How to hold up against Criticism…

WHO ARE YOU Know YOURSELF Step One: who Know Yourself – this is a reality issue. Know what you do well and what you don’t do well. Be prepared to be criticized – you cannot impart what you do not possess. Know YOURSELF

Change YOURSELF Step Two: Change Yourself – this is a responsibility issue. Leaders change first. Maintain the right attitude when criticized by not being defensive, looking for the grain of truth, making the necessary changes and taking the high road. Change YOURSELF

Forget YOURSELF Step Three: Forget Yourself – this is a security issue. Stop focusing on yourself. No one else is paying much attention to you. We all need grace and forgiveness Forget YOURSELF

Never Work a Day In Your Life Accomplish Attempt Meet Feel Motivate Believe Lead Passion separates the extraordinary from the ordinary. Passion enables you to: Believe things you would not have believed Feel think you would not have felt Attempt things you would not attempted Accomplish things you would not have accomplished Met people you would not have met Motivate people you would not have motivated Lead people you would not have led Passion is the key to Potential

The Best Leaders Are Listeners Listening is the best way to learn Listening can keep problems from escalating Listening can improve the organization

Get In the Zone and Stay There Ask yourself, “What do you do well?” Get specific Find your strength zone

A Leader’s First Responsibility Is to: According to Jack Welch, the CEO of all CEOS… Six Rules for Leadership: #1: Control your destiny; or someone else will #2: Face reality as it is, not as it was or as you wish it were #3: Be candid with everyone #4: Don’t manage; lead #5: Change before you have to #6: If you don’t have a competitive advantage, don’t compete Define Reality

To See How the Leader Is Doing Are the people… CHANGING FOLLOWING SUCCEEDING GROWING Q1 – all leaders have two common characteristics – first they are going somewhere and second, they are able to persuade people to follow Q2 – Are the people willing to make a change for the sake of progress Q3 – The best leaders help people with more than their jobs, they help with their lives Q4 – Leadership is meant to lift others and help others succeed Look at the People

Don’t Send Your Ducks to Eagle School You will frustrate the EAGLES You will frustrate the DUCKS You will frustrate YOURSELF

Keep Your Mind on the Main Thing 80% of traffic jams 80% of beer consumed 80% of participation 80% of the time 80% of profits 20% of customers 20% of clothes worn 20% of students 20% of drinkers 20% of roads The Pareto Principle (80/20 Rule)

Keep Your Mind on the Main Thing 20% of activities FOCUS ON 20% 16x more productive than remaining 80%!!! The Pareto Principle (80/20 Rule)

Your Biggest Mistake is… Not Asking What Mistake You’re Making Give Permission to Push Back Ask: “What Are We Missing?” Admit Your Own Mistakes and Weaknesses Accept Mistakes as the Price of Progress

Manage Your Life Don’t Manage Your Time Time-Management is an oxymoron – you cannot manage time – you have no control over it Manage Your Life

How to Judge if Something is Worth Your Time and Attention Rate the importance of the task Rate the urgency of the task Multiply urgency by importance See page 38-39 of Leadership Gold Facilitator Guide for Calculation example. Manage the tasks of your life and you will make the most of your time

Keep Learning to Keep Leading All great leaders invest themselves in a personal growth plan Invest In Yourself First

Keep Learning to Keep Leading To progress as a leader is to transition from being a person of answers to a person of lessons. Be a Continual Learner

Leaders Distinguish Themselves During Tough Times Leaders have to be willing to do things others are unwilling to do. They have to put themselves on the line. The Tough Call Demands Risk

Leaders Distinguish Themselves During Tough Times Difficult times faced by leaders begins within them, not with others. Doing the right thing isn’t always easy, but it is necessary if a leader wants to maintain integrity and remain effective. The Tough Call Brings With It an Inward Battle

People Quit People, Not Companies People coming in – join a team

People Quit People, Not Companies People leave because they feel devalued by their leader, the leader is untrustworthy, the leader is incompetent, the leader is insecure People going out – leave a person

Experience Is Not the Best Teacher Our attitude toward unplanned and unpleasant experiences determines our growth Lack of experience is costly Experience is also costly Evaluated experience lifts a person above the crowd

The Secret to a Good Meeting Is the Meeting Before the Meeting If you can’t have the pre meeting, don’t have the meeting If the pre meeting is not good, don’t have the meeting Gain Perspective Increase Influence Avoid Being Blindsided Meetings usually fail because the leader doesn’t have a clear agenda and/or the attendees in the meeting have their own agenda. Good planning always costs less than good reacting.

Be a Connector, Not Just a Climber Think Horizontal Focus on Relationships Value Cooperation Seek Partnerships Build Consensus Think Vertical Focus on Position Value Competition Seek Power Build Their Image If you climb without connecting you may gain authority but you won’t have many friends If you connect well but possess little desire to climb, you may end up with many friends but not much authority to accomplish anything Climbing and Connecting are not an either/or but a both/and.

The Choices You Make, Make You Standards for yourself will be higher than what others might set for you Helping people is more important than making them happy Your focus is on the present

Influence Should Be Loaned but Never Given Influence exists to speak up for those who don’t have influence Influence exists to speak to those who do have influence Influence exists to be passed on to others

For Everything You Gain, You Give Up Something spiritual work SPIRITUAL WALK first half SECOND HALF acceptable addition MULTIPLICATION EXCELLENT exploration quantity of life QUALITY OF LIFE FOCUS immediate pleasure PERSONAL GROWTH POTENTIAL financial gain security SIGNIFICANCE affirmation ACCOMPLISHMENT Ten Tradeoffs Worth Making

Those Who Start the Journey With You Seldom Finish With You Gaining Perspective

Few Leaders Are Successful Unless a Lot of People Want Them to Be Mentors draw you up to them Supporters lift you up to a better you

You Only Get Answers to the Questions You Ask Some people see questions as a sign of ignorance. Leaders see them as a sign of engagement, curiosity, and the desire to improve.

People Will Summarize You in One Sentence, Pick it Now What will you leave behind? Determine your legacy today
