Romeo And Juliet Act 1 Scenes 2-4 Summaries/ expectations

Today’s Review summaries of scenes 2-3 Observe Act 1 scenes 2-3 Goals Rationale Review summaries of scenes 2-3 Observe Act 1 scenes 2-3 Read summaries of Scene 4 Watch Scene 4 Conduct a close analysis of the “Queen Mab’s” speech given by Mercutio. Plays are meant to be experienced To improve on our language skills (RL.9-10.4, L9-10.4) we will be conducting close analysis of passages within RJ (like the prologue) We will continue to analyze the plot (the WHAT) through various film versions and assess what is added and left out in each interpretation (RL. 9-10.7)

Summaries Act 1 Scene 2- Capulet house; Capulet office Paris is a relative to the Prince, he is neither a Montague nor a Capulet. He is rich, and asks Capulet to marry Juliet. Capulet is concerned over his only daughter, and says to wait two years. Capulet then asks Paris to a masquerade (mask party ) that night so he can begin to woo Juliet. Benvolio and Romeo learn about the party from an illiterate Capulet servant

Act 1 Scene 3- Capulet house; Juliet’s room Nurse is fussing over getting Juliet ready The nurse tells a silly story of Juliet as a child Lady Capulet takes this chance to talk to Juliet about Marriage. We see the connection between Juliet and the Nurse, and see Nurse’s personality. (they are close) We also see Juliet’s connection to her mother (distant) Juliet agrees to “Look” at Paris at the dance, but makes no promises

Movie Version- 1968 Yes, I know it’s old… but Romeo is pretty fine, and so is Tybalt (Mercutio…eh.) It is also one of the best adaptations that follows the text. 1996 is cool, but super confusing 2013 is super pretty, but changes everything from plot, to lines, to characters We will be using/watching other versions as well, but remember, this will be the main one we’ll pull from If you are ABSENT during any of the viewings, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to catch up by READING the text and/or sparknotes/summaries, or WATCHING these scenes elsewhere. Being absent is not an excuse for not doing. For assignments that are heavy handed on viewing, you are expected to attend the NEXT tutoring date (PM) for a second viewing. After school buses are available.
