Matter has observable properties.
Objective Identify & analyze properties & changes in matter by using worksheets demonstrations, notes and collaboration. Main Ideas 1. Physical Property.
Physical and Chemical Properties. Physical Physical PROPERTY: A characteristic of a substance that can be observed without changing the substance into.
Physical and Chemical Changes. Physical Property  Observable traits that do not change the identity of the substance  Include color, shape, smell, taste,

Acids, Bases, & Chemical Changes. Physical Change A change in matter in which the appearance or state (solid, liquid, or gas) of the matter is altered,
Mass, color, volume, and weight are examples of physical properties. A physical property can be observed or measured without changing the substance. Example:
Chemical and Physical Properties. Matter All matter has 2 types of properties: Physical properties and chemical properties.

A Physical Property is a property that can be observed without changing the make up of the substance. You just look at it - or measure it. Examples are:
Physical and Chemical Properties and Changes Physical Properties Characteristics of a material that you can observe without changing the substances that.
Chemical Properties and Chemical Changes. Chemical Changes A chemical change results in a new substance (or new substances) being produced - as a result.
Physical Change A change that alters the form or appearance of a substance but does NOT make the material into another substance –Example: ripping paper,

Changes in Matter Vocabulary

It can be a change in size, shape, mass, volume, color, texture, etc. Physical Change A change that happens to a piece of matter that doesn’t change what the matter is. It can be a change in size, shape, mass, volume, color, texture, etc.

Iron into Rust Fizzing Alka Seltzer Burning Wood Bleached Fabric Chemical Change A change that happens to a piece of matter that changes it into a completely different piece of matter--something totally new. Iron into Rust Fizzing Alka Seltzer Burning Wood Bleached Fabric

chemical property an attribute, or characteristic that can only be observed and measured during a reaction that alters, or changes, what the piece of matter is (a chemical change)

Combustion The process of burning

pH Indicators: litmus paper, cabbage juice, grape juice. A substance or item that shows (indicates) that an event has happened or that a property exists. Indicators of Chemical Change: temperature change, bubbles (gas formation), formation of a new solid. pH Indicators: litmus paper, cabbage juice, grape juice.

Acid A compound that has a sour taste. It has a pH that measures less than 7.

Base A compound that has a bitter taste. They are often slippery to the touch. A base has a pH that measures more than 7.

A substance that is used during a chemical reaction. Reactant A substance that is used during a chemical reaction.

A substance that is made during a chemical reaction. Product A substance that is made during a chemical reaction.
