District Assembly Making Change Real May 2012 District Assembly May 2012

Stuart Heal says:   ‘Change is essential to make it more relevant for today and to encourage more participation’. ‘To survive change must be considered as an integral part of our future development. No longer can we sit back in our comfortable cocoon, satisfied that we are doing good deeds. To survive we need to attract and retain members”. Stuart Heal, our Rotary Director and head of the RI Strategy Committee We have a falling membership and aging members – we are loosing about 5% of our membership each year – this can not continue else we will go the way of the dinosaurs – we will become extinct. My story – youngest in club 20 years ago – still youngest – do I want to be youngest in another 20 years Need to make Rotary more relevant for today – Stuarts Quotes District Assembly May 2012

He goes on to say District Assembly May 2012 We need to support and strengthen clubs To focus on service and not attendance To use modern contemporary language To amend membership requirements To create online clubs We need to increase Humanitarian Service To make Rotary our charity of choice To focus on program resources and support To look for more partnerships outside of Rotary To connect with and attract all Rotary alumni We need to enhance public image and awareness To stop brand confusion To use new social media tools More from Stuart District Assembly May 2012

BUT we must preserve our core essence Rotary is based on a strong set of core values, Service Fellowship Diversity Integrity Leadership’ It is important that we focus on our core strategic aims: Support and Strengthen Clubs Focus and Increase Humanitarian Service Enhance Public Image and Awareness While doing this we will need to ‘Push Boundaries’ and ensure we ‘Make Change Real’ to meet the challenges ahead. But we must preserve our values – our core essence Tony’s story We must look at how we can attract a greater diversity of members in ethnicity, age and gender Youth join causes, not clubs – look at what happened in Christchurch. Change can be frightening Change in Government – my story – change can overtake you Change presents us with exciting opportunities CLUB VISIONING – a focus in my year But – we will make it a 3 step process – Visioning Provide support to drive that change through Review Challenging PEs to do something different for my visits – Have the courage to try something different. Have the Courage to CHANGE District Assembly May 2012

The Clock is Ticking It is time to look to our core values – Service above self It is time to recognise service and not attendance It is time to modernise our meetings and make them attractive to a more diverse and younger group of members It is time to simplify our branding It is time to make Rotary our charity of choice It is time to engage with our communities BUT MAKE NO MISTAKE – the clock is Ticking We do need to change We need to ….. ….. … I am passionate about Rotary – other wise I WOULD NOT BE HERE THE FUTURE IS IN OUR HANDS It is time to PUSH BOUNDARIES and MAKE CHANGE REAL District Assembly May 2012

2012-2013 Conference District Assembly May 2012 Several years ago Stuart Heal Challenged the then DGs He said we needed to be working closer together across our NZ Districts He challenged us to run a multi District PETS The then DGs took up this challenge and we have now run two very successful MD PETS A year ago he again challenged us ad DGNs to look at how we could work together and learn from each other. Ron Seeto (DG 9920) and I took up that challenge and we decided that in 2013 we would run a multi-district conference We have agreed to Push the Boundaries We asked Ron 13 year old daughter to make a promotional video for us and this is what she came up with – by the way it is this that has inspired me to take the line that you might recognise. District Assembly May 2012

District Assembly May 2012 Rotary is at a junction in its journey. We can carry on down the road we are on with might fade away into the distance. Or We can take a turn in the road and take a more challenging route and climb a mountain where the rewards can be great. I want to climb that mountain but I can not do it alone. Rotary has a great future. I want to invite you on the beginning of a new and exciting journey for our organisation – a journey into the future where we will Push Boundaries. Christine and I are looking forward to visiting your clubs over the coming months to see what you are doing to make this Change Real. We look for to working with you all on a challenging and rewarding year ahead. Safe travels. District Assembly May 2012
