Writing a Strong Intellectual Statement APT Workshop Marilyn H. Oermann Original workshop materials and statement guidelines developed by Ruth Anderson

APT Criteria Significance Impact Why is your work important? How have you influenced science, student learning, clinical practice? Think “products,” N of people affected

Parts of the Statement Research (Tracks I and III) or Scholarship (Track II) Teaching Service Clinical Practice (Track II)

Introduction “This document summarizes the impact and significance of my contributions in [insert your focus].” Briefly summarize accomplishments in research/scholarship, teaching, service, & practice. Brief

Research or Scholarship Plan ahead of writing “Umbrella” or focus under which your work falls, e.g., Musical cues to remind nursing staff to turn residents every 2 hours. Development of same day heart failure clinic, impact on readmissions Evaluation of flipped classroom, improved student satisfaction and test scores

Research or Scholarship cont Identify your major contributions “My major contribution is in preventing readmissions to...” Outline them 1st with notes about evidence to support

Writing this Section Introduce your “umbrella” or focus Then write a paragraph for each major contribution (from your outline) End with summary of your planned next steps

Writing this Section cont Begin each paragraph with a strong assertion (My contribution is….) Then support the statement with evidence about your work Then describe the significance Then describe the impact

What is a strong assertion statement? State your expertise and/or contribution Support with evidence Use action verbs Examples: My research studies were the first to describe… I am an expert in interprofessional education…

What is evidence describing the work? Brief descriptions of the studies, practice innovations, teaching innovations Examples: In a series of studies, I documented… The practice model I developed and use in the clinic is based on collaboration among providers…

What is evidence of significance? What new directions does the work suggest for practice/teaching? State findings in clinical terms, learner outcomes This intervention indicates that nursing homes can expect 30 fewer falls/100 beds annually. With this simulation students can significantly improve their observation and assessment skills. Examples: My research has addressed problems of… and tested interventions that have improved care outcomes The video I developed is the only one available on …

What is evidence of impact? What products or artifacts have I created? Dissemination products: Journal articles, book chapters, books, invited lectures, consultations, presentations, etc. Teaching materials, websites, videos Who has a used my work? How many hospitals now use my clinic model? How many people have cited my work? How many faculty have adopted my teaching approach?

What is evidence of impact? cont Examples: The impact of my research is demonstrated by x publications in top tier nursing and interdisciplinary journals such as… I have had a significant impact on care of older adults in the ED. I have published x articles and x chapters on best practices for care of acutely ill..

Teaching Section Introduce your teaching—overall focus of teaching, scope, and depth Address roles (classroom teaching, online teaching, mentoring, course and curriculum development, grants to support teaching innovations) End with summary of your planned next steps

Teaching Section: Significance/Impact Evidence of significance? New clinical site led to improved learning opportunities for students First time this teaching approach was used nursing students Evidence of impact? An additional 10 students were able to have experiences in nurse managed clinics Examples: I have developed a course, x title, that integrates concepts of… My teaching innovation has been adopted throughout the School of Nursing. I have published articles on this …, and faculty from other schools of nursing have contacted me about it.

Service Section Organize by level of organization Organize by region DUSON Medical Center Duke University Organize by region Local Regional National International

Service Section: Significance/Impact Evidence of Significance Served as chair of the committee that developed recommendations for the on-campus intensives Evidence of Impact These recommendations led to higher student and faculty satisfaction with the on-campus intensives

Small Group Work Research or scholarly practice Write your umbrella statements What are your major contributions for each one? (outline content to include) Write 1 paragraph for one of your contributions My contribution is… My expertise is in… Describe studies, practice initiatives, teaching innovations (evidence) that supports that statement What is the significance of those studies, innovations? What impact have you had (articles in journals that are cited, teaching materials faculty have adopted)

Small Group Work cont Teaching Service Write overall focus, scope Describe your teaching roles (refer to criteria) Significance and impact of your teaching, mentoring… Service Describe your service roles by level, region (refer to criteria) Significance and impact of your service
