Tips for drawing Lewis structures Look at bonding capacity! Carbon will want to form 4 bonds Nitrogen will want to form 3 bonds Oxygen will want to form 2 bonds Halogens will form 1 bond Hydrogen will form 1 bond All of the above apply to elements in the same column as they have same # of V.E. Central atom Choose the one with the highest bonding capacity (the one that will want to form the most bonds). If Carbon is in the formula, try making it the central atom! Why? It has a large bonding capacity, 4 bonds. When drawing Lewis structure: Make sure each atom has the correct # of V.E. around it. (only when a substances are neutral)
