German Cockroach Identification Talk Objectives The Law German Cockroach Identification Bedbug Identification Biology Treatments

The Law Who's responsible for dealing with infestations? Working out who's responsible for dealing with an infestation depends on several things, including: • whether there's anything about it in your tenancy agreement, or • whether the property was infested before tenants moved in, or • if the problem is being caused or made worse by disrepair, hygiene or • if something that you've done or haven't done has led to the problem. It's not always straightforward working out who's responsible. A professional pest control contractor might be able to identify the cause of an infestation, which in turn might help work out who's responsible.

German Cockroach Identification

Adults 1/2-3/4 inch long Fully developed wings but cannot fly Small brown markings on the thorax Even household infestations can number in the thousands Cockroach infestations are always focussed in kitchens check under surfaces and around water- pipes

Bed Bug Indentification

Reddish brown in colour Adults are 1/4 inch long (similar in size to a ladybird) Located around mattress and bed but can be found literally anywhere in a bedroom Look for blood spots and eggs in cracks and crevasse

Biology

German cockroach Bed Bug Prefers humid and warm habitat Rapid population growth due to large numbers of eggs per sack and short period to sexual maturity Public health pest Carry diseases like Salmonella and Dysentery Egg sacks containing 32 eggs are carried by females until ready to hatch (so never tread on a cockroach) Prefers bedrooms habitat Chemically resistant species Adults can live for 12 months between feeds Rapid population growth due to females laying 4-5 eggs per day Bites cause skin irritation and phycological effects to victim Infestations often spread to expensive electrical equipment and furniture, making treatments costly and riddance very difficult

Treatments Treatments for these pests are actually quite similar. Both require detailed chemical application with multiple agents IGR or Insect growth regulator is required in both cases Booster agents are often required to gain successful population control Historically we can say that bedbug infestations can be resolved with 1-3 treatments depending on population Cockroach riddance programs may require 3-6 treatments again depending on population
