Substance Use Prevention Policies at GHS Granville HS

Layer 1: Student Code of Conduct Substance Use Policy for all GHS students: You may not consume… You may not be under the influence… You may not distribute… …at school, on school grounds, or at school-sponsored activities.

Layer 2: Extracurricular Substance Abuse Substance Use Policy for all GHS students who are members of an extracurricular activity: You may not consume… You may not be under the influence… You may not distribute… …EVER! This includes approximately 90% of GHS students each year.

Layer 3: Extracurricular Substance Use Prevention Policy AKA: Random Student Drug Testing Approved by the GEVSD Board of Education in May, 2017 Policy includes an opt-out provision Details of the policy, including consequences and associated forms, located in packet

Highlights of the Policy The results of random tests will be communicated only to the parents/guardians of the students as long as the tests are negative for substances (no substances detected). In the event of a positive test result: The results are communicated only to the parents/guardians of the students. The students testing positive will be automatically placed into the testing pool for a minimum of two additional tests. The results of each of these subsequent tests will be reported to the parents/guardians. However, any positive results of these subsequent tests will be reported to the school district which will result in the consequences outlined in the policy.

Layer 3: Extracurricular Substance Use Prevention Policy Option 1: Consent Complete and submit consent form Participate in random tests throughout the year Option 2: Opt-out Complete and submit opt-out form Consent/Opt-out forms are submitted via FinalForms. EVERY STUDENT AND PARENT MUST CHOOSE TO CONSENT OR OPT-OUT BY AUGUST 15.

FAQs Q: When is my student eligible to be tested? A: Once a student establishes membership in a competitive extracurricular, they are included as a part of the testing pool for one calendar year. For example, a fall athlete established membership in a fall sport on August 1. They are included as a part of the testing pool until July 31 of the following year. They will be included until they are removed from the testing pool by doing one of the following: Complete and submit an opt-out form Discontinue membership in the competitive extracurricular by non-participation

FAQs Q: Can I opt my student out of the substance use testing program at the conclusion of a season of a competitive extracurricular activity? A: No. Once students establish membership in the competitive extracurricular and become a member of the testing pool, they are included for a calendar year as mentioned above.

FAQs Q: If I am 18 years old, can I opt myself out of the substance use testing program? A: Only 18 year olds who are not dependents of their parents/guardians can opt out of the program without a parent/guardian signature.

FAQs Q: What communication will I receive from the testing vendor? A: No news is good news. Only positive test results will be communicated to parents/guardians.

FAQs  Q: Can I call the testing vendor to confirm the negative results of my student’s test? A: Yes. The parent/guardian will need to reference the student copy of the Custody and Control Form to learn the results.

FAQs Q: If my student is a member of more than one competitive extracurricular activity, does he/she need to submit more than one consent or opt-out form? A: No. Consent or opting-out applies to all activities in that particular school year.

QUESTIONS? If you have any questions or concerns, contact Mr. Durst or Mr. Jarrett.
