Unit 1 Review Game Study Study Study

How has the Mississippi River caused the coastline of Louisiana to continually evolve and change? The Mississippi would flood and deposit sediment which allowed the coastline of LA to build over thousands of years. Louisiana has changed and evolve due to the deposits of sediment.

How has the geography of Louisiana impacted the location of our major cities and influenced migration patterns of settlers? Migration patterns have followed the path of our major waterways which has caused our large cities to be located near rivers.

Based on Poverty Point’s geography why was this group able to develop a sophisticated trade network throughout the United States? Their location along the Mississippi River.

How were Native Americans impacted by European arrival in Louisiana How were Native Americans impacted by European arrival in Louisiana? How did their culture change and why were they forced to migrate from their ancestral homes after European arrival? Their culture was modified by European technology and many tribes were forced to leave their ancestral homes because of Europeans settling in Louisiana and wanting the land held by natives.

What about Louisiana’s geography has made agriculture an important part of the state economy? Flat land, alluvial soil, waterways for trade, plenty of water and good climate for crops.

What about Louisiana’s climate has made agriculture an important part of the state? We have a 290 day growing season because of an early spring due to our location (sub tropical climate).

What would be the negative impacts of Louisiana’s 2 What would be the negative impacts of Louisiana’s 2.5 million acres of marshland disappearing? The shrimping industry would experience a decline and the populations of birds would decrease. The southern portion of Louisiana would experience more destructive hurricanes. People would lose their homes and LA would be negatively impacted economoically.

How has the migration of various ethnic groups to Louisiana impacted the culture of the state? Various ethnic groups have brought part of their culture with them which has mixed with the culture of LA. Cultural diffusion. Ex. Spanish and African tradition led to the creation of Jambalaya.

Why is Louisiana home to over 300 festivals Why is Louisiana home to over 300 festivals? Many related to the economy surrounding agriculture. They are used by many communities to show off their agriculture and to sell their agricultural products. Brings additional money into these communities.

Louisiana Cultural Regions- Match the person to the description of their region. Sammy Sportsman B- Christy Crossroads C- Cezelia Cajun D- Peter Planation E- Nancy New Orleans   26. This region is known for its great hunting and fishing. Biking, camping, and rodeos are also popular in this area. We don’t use as much seasoning in our food compared to people in other parts of the state. Our favorite types of music that are country and gospel. 27. This region is home to our state capital and is known for the large planation homes that can be found along the banks of the Mississippi River. The harsh life suffered by slaves in this region led to the rise of the Blues. 28. This region is a mix of many of the cultural characteristics of North and South Louisiana. You will find this area full of hills, prairies and bayous. Rock n’ Roll developed in this area when country music blended with the blues. 29. This region attracts tourists for Mardi Gras every year, especially to the world famous French Quarter. We are known for our food such as beignets and café au lait. We are also the birthplace of Jazz. 30. This region reflects Louisiana’s French-Acadian culture, in fact the French language is still spoken in this region. Many foods that Louisiana is famous for developed in this region, including: etoufee, gumbo, jambalaya, and boudin. This region is also famous for its boat tours of swamps and bayous

What has happened to the coastline of Louisiana over the last 100 years and why? Coastal wetlands have been destroyed because of human interventions which include: canals, levees, MISS. River course change.

What is cultural diffusion and how has it influenced Louisiana? Cultural diffusion is the spread of cultural beliefs and social activities from one group of people to another. Through cultural diffusion, horizons are broadened and people become more culturally rich. Various cultures/ethnic groups have combined to form the culture of LA.

How has the elevation compare to other areas of the United States How has the elevation compare to other areas of the United States? How has this impacted the cultural identity of Louisiana? Lower elevation in LA compared to other states. This has impacted how we build, where we live, what we wear, what we eat, and natural disasters we have.

How is Louisiana agricultural industry impacted by hurricanes and flooding? Salter water intrusion can kill agricultural plants it comes into contact with.

What are the unintended consequences of human efforts to control flooding the Mississippi River? Human intervention has caused flooding to be controlled by levees, dams, canals, etc. Land loss along the Louisiana coastline.

How has the man-made canal system impacted the coastal wetlands? It has led to more salter water intrusion in the wetlands which kills fresh water marshes.

What structures are Native Americans in Louisiana famous for making and what were their purpose? Mounds, ceremonies

How has alluvial soil created by the Mississippi River helped shape LA’s culture and economy? Led to our strong agricultural economy and food base festivals held throughout LA to show off product and make money.

How has the abundance of waterways in LA influenced LA’s history and migration patterns? Migration patterns followed the waterways of LA. Hence why our major cities and ports are located along those waterways.

How does the physical geography of LA impact our cultural identity? Impacts the clothing we wear, wear we live, what we do for fun, what we eat, how we build our houses, etc.

Be able to discuss the causes and impacts of coastal erosion. The wetlands are currently disappearing (eroding away) because sediment is not being deposited in the wetlands by the Mississippi the way it has naturally occurred for thousands of years. The lack of sediment being placed in the wetlands is because of levees, dams, spillways etc. Canals are also allowing saltwater to enter fresh water marshes which leads to saltwater intrusion and the killing of natural plans. Loss of land, more destructive hurricanes, bird and sea life populations can’t reproduce as much as needed, loss of culture and homes, increased seafood prices, interference with oil industry.
