POLYGONS. BUILDING POLYGONS We use line segments to build polygons. A polygon is a closed shape with straight sides.
Shape and Space INTERNAL ANGLES. POLYGON (REGULAR). A polygon is a two dimensional shape with straight sides. There are two types of polygon, regular.
Exploring Polygons. What are polygons? A polygon is a closed figure made by joining line segments, where each line segment intersects exactly two others.
Our learning objectives today: To be able to recognise and name 2D shapes. To know about quadrilaterals.

Names & Properties of 2D Shapes WALT: name & group 2D shapes & identify their properties

Regular vs Irregular Shapes Regular shapes have sides that are all equal in length and inside angles that are all equal. Irregular shapes have sides of any length and angles of any size.

POLYGON QUADRILATERAL A polygon is a flat shape made up of straight lines and it is enclosed. Some examples are: 3 sides - Triangle 4 sides - Quadrilateral 5 sides - Pentagon 6 sides - Hexagon 7 sides - Heptagon 8 sides - Octagon 9 sides - Nonagon 10 sides - Decagon Quadrilaterals are 4 sided polygons. Some examples are: Square Rectangle Rhombus Kite Parallelogram Trapezium

What is a shape with 3 straight sides? A triangle! Some triangles have a right angle. These are called right angle triangles.

Irregular quadrilateral Any shape that has 4 straight sides is a quadrilateral. rhombus trapezoid Irregular quadrilateral parallelogram kite square rectangle How many quadrilaterals can you imagine?

Any shape that has 5 straight sides is a pentagon. irregular pentagon regular pentagon Any shape that has 5 straight sides is a pentagon. A regular pentagon has 5 sides of equal length.

What is a shape with 6 straight sides? regular hexagon Any shape that has 6 straight sides is a hexagon. What do you think is special about a regular hexagon?

Any shape that has 8 straight sides is an octagon. regular octagon Any shape that has 8 straight sides is an octagon.

You may need to GOOGLE to find out! What about 9 sided shapes? 10 sided shapes? 11 sided shapes? 12 sided shapes? Etc What are they called? You may need to GOOGLE to find out!
