Abraham: Covenant and Chosenness Professor Tate 8/30/17

Vocabulary The Aqedah (“The Binding of Isaac”) Covenant Monolatry vs. Monotheism

Covenant 1 Between God and “all flesh” in Genesis 9 Conditions On the human side: We cannot spill each other’s blood, or there will be consequences. On God’s side: He will never again wipe out the earth. Sign of the covenant Rainbow

Covenant 2 Between God and Abraham and his descendants (Genesis 15 and 17) Conditions On Abraham’s side: He and his descendants will worship YHWH alone and do what he commands them. On God’s side: He will make a great nation out of Abraham’s seed, blessing it and giving it the Promised Land. Sign of the covenant Circumcision

Who is abraham?

Why did yhwh choose Abraham?

Genesis 12:1-3 Now Yhwh said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

Joshua 24:2-3 And Joshua said to all the people, "Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Long ago your ancestors—Terah and his sons Abraham and Nahor—lived beyond the Euphrates and served other gods. Then I took your father Abraham from beyond the River and led him through all the land of Canaan and made his offspring many. I gave him Isaac…

Genesis 22 (the aqedah) After these things God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt-offering on one of the mountains that I shall show you.”

Did abraham know it was a test? ... Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; the boy and I will go over there; we will worship, and then we will come back to you.” … Isaac said to his father Abraham, “Father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “The fire and the wood are here, but where is the lamb for a burnt-offering?” Abraham said, “God himself will provide the lamb for a burnt-offering, my son.” So the two of them walked on together.
