Genesis 22: The family of Nahor After these things Implies a chronology Milcah also – in addition to Sarah Family members but not Abraham’s seed and not Jews so not of the chosen line Rebekah revealed – the future wife of Isaac 12 sons – 8 from his legitimate wife and 4 from his concubine Similar pattern to Ishmael, Esau and Jacob Abraham did not, it seems, despise his wider family, but retained both interest and consideration for them

Genesis 23: The mother of believing women dies No indication of chronology (after these things is missing) 127 years The only women whose age is given in the bible Should have been written as 100 and 7 and 20 Various significances given for this Rabbis said things like, “when she was 100, she was like a 7 year old with regard to sin”, and, “when she gave birth (at 90) she was like a twenty year old” A Special number Prime Mersenne prime (27 – 1) The smallest triple Mersenne prime number A centred hexagonal number Related to the perfect number 8128

Genesis 23: The mother of believing women dies She died in the place of fellowship in the land of promise Genesis chronology indicates Isaac stayed up the hill (ascended) His mother died when he was 37 – some years after the akkedah (binding) Rabbis said and continue to say she was a type of Israel New Testament Scholars state she was too and that Rebekkah was a type of The Church Isaac lost Sarah – Jesus lost Israel A bride for Isaac was sought among the Gentiles – The Church was sought for Jesus as His Gentile bride Salvation is from the Jews Salvation is therefore from Sarah in the sense that she is the mother of all Jews and a Grandmother of Jesus

Genesis 23: The mother of believing women dies Jesus’ death was supernatural, as was Isaac’s Sarah was a barren wife who despite this barrenness brought forth the son of promise at the appointed time Israel had the oracles of God, was favoured, but was barren in that it failed to bring this to the world and had no spiritual fruit Despite this and with supernatural intervention, Israel brought forth the Messiah (son of promise) at the appointed time Following Isaac’s death the bride of Abraham (by type, God the Father) was set aside but He was to be re-married at a later date according to the typology as seen with Kiturah.

Genesis 23: The mother of believing women dies Mourning and weeping was a sign of respect It was the fact that Abraham ‘came’ to mourn that caused Rabbis to infer that he had not yet returned from the (intended) sacrifice of Isaac Unlikely given the time lag of some years Normally one’s dead would be taken home for burial This showed that Abraham had truly left his roots – this was now home He was in the promised land

Genesis 23: The mother of believing women dies The sons of Heth (son of Canaan, so a Canaanite probably the origin of the Hittites)) Name associated with depletion of strength or willpower Also with associations to do with terror and fear Modern equivalent – leech, exhauster, depriver Abraham revered by them The bartering process Also seen in 2 Samuel 24 v 24 No argument over price Precious unto The Lord is the death of His Saints (Psalm 116 v 15) (Revelation 14 v 13)

Genesis 23: The mother of believing women dies It is suggested that the price for such a piece of land at this time should have been 4 shekels of silver However, no price was to much to pay for Sarah (Israel) The cave of Machpelah is, today, on of the best attested and verified sites Sarah, Abraham, Isaac, Rebekkah, Jacob and Leah. The title deed still holds good Jewish tradition says that this is also the burial place of Adam and Eve Some also say Moses and Zipporah are buried here

Genesis 23: The mother of believing women dies Some use this typology to support the view that as far as God is concerned Israel is dead However Death does not mean the end with The Lord Jesus was rejected by God and was resurrected Israel was rejected by Jesus (Matthew 12) But will be resurrected (Ezekiel 37) And will turn to their Messiah (Zechariah 12 v 10) The typology aligns with God losing Israel and gaining her back through resurrection – being born again?
