Spanish Paths at Bailey Exploratory Spanish is taught to students in the 6th grade with emphasis on building an understanding of the language, learning how to communicate basic information in the language and being able to make an informed decision about taking the language year long in the 7th grade. Spanish I Part A is done in the 7th grade and covers units 1 and 2 of the Spanish I Curriculum. This course is done for high school credit, and is the first year of a two year course. Spanish I Part B is done in the 8th grade. It builds on what was taught in the 7th grade and units 2 and 3 of the Spanish I Curriculum is done at this level. This is the final year of the two year course for high school credit.

REQUIRED SUPPLIES A notebook Pencil / a pen (black or blue ink) A pair of ear buds/ a headphone Colored pencils (for in class activities or mini projects) Glue, glue stick or tape A folder/Binder (to keep handouts) Notebook paper

6th Grade Curriculum – Quarter 1 Classroom Commands Greetings & Farewell Introductions Polite Expressions/Common Courtesy Numbers: phone number, age, mathematical equations Days of the week (today, yesterday, tomorrow & favorite day) Months of the year (Telling the date & birthday) Description (personality & physical characteristics) Colors Classroom Supplies It is important to note that tests are administered throughout and students will do a cumulative benchmark after covering these topics

6th Grade Curriculum – Quarter 2 Family & description of family relationships Pets (identifying and describing) Description (of family members) House Places in the neighborhood Time Weather Clothing Tests are administered throughout and students will do a cumulative benchmark after covering these topics

7th Grade Curriculum Unit 1 – Quarters 1 & 2 Unit 2 – Quarters 3 and 4 The Alphabet Classroom Commands Greetings & Farewell Names and Introductions Describing emotions/well-being/ state of being Polite Expressions/Common Courtesy Numbers: phone number, age, mathematical equations Days of the week (today, yesterday, tomorrow & favorite day) Months of the year (Date & birthday) Description (personality, physical characteristics/features nationality) Family (description, relationships & genealogical tree) Likes and Dislikes Classes and Schedule Time Ordinal Numbers School & Class activities Places in school School supplies & Colors Description of people in the school (plural) Classes (likes, dislikes & why) School (description of, likes & dislikes) Daily Routine (Reflexive Verbs) Food and Meal Times House, Furniture and what activities relate to each room

8th Grade Curriculum Leisure Activities – (¿Qué te gusta hacer?) Likes and Dislikes (Gustar with nouns & verbs) The near future (¿Qué vas a hacer…?) Verb Conjugations – Regular, Irregular, Reflexive and Stem Changing verbs Adverbs of frequency and varied expressions of time Places in the Neighborhood Location – (Estar + Prepositions of place) Giving & Following Directions Verbs that have the same menaing but different uses (ser/estar & saber/conocer) Ability to do something (poder) Events Extending, Accepting & declining invitations with an explanation/reason Weather and Seasons Leisure activities based on the weather Sports

ASSESSMENT WEIGHT & GRADES 70% Formal Assessments – Tests, Projects, & CMS Standardized Benchmark 30% Informal Assessments – Homework, Quizzes, Classwork (Note that the weight changes for 4th Qrt for Spanish I and the 2nd semester for Exploratory Spanish) Grading System A = 90% – 100% B = 80% – 89% C = 70% - 79% D = 60% - 69% F = Below 60% Students will be assigned homework that relate to the five language skills – listening, speaking, reading, writing and viewing. I expect the homework, when given, to be completed in a timely manner and turned in when due. If a student does not understand something, I am available to provide extra help and clarity. It is the student’s responsibility to come and see me.

RETAKE POLICY A student who scores less than 80% on a formal assessment may retake the assessment to score up to 80% of the new grade. Remediation sheet required.
