Working interprofessionally – A real-life view. Inter-professional Learning Symposia School of Health and Education 2018 - 2019 Tutor Mary Clark Role: Senior Lecturer child health E-mail address: m.p.clark@mdx.ac.uk

Meet the participants….. Presentation title

Compiling a glossary: during the symposia please prepare a piece of paper with the headings given below Term Definition

Learning outcomes To explore the meaning and the realities of “Interprofessional working” To investigate through the experience of professionals why interprofessional working consistently features as an area of weakness in research and serious case reviews To explore how good interprofessional practice can be promoted in future To identify through post session reflection, how the principles of good interprofessional working can be applied to your own practice Inter-professional Learning Symposia

Interprofessional education: Why are we here? “Interprofessional education occurs when two or more professions learn with, from and about each other to improve collaboration and the quality of care” Barr, 2002 Presentation title

Working together: which term to use? Multidisciplinary working Interprofessional working Interagency working Presentation title

Definition of interprofessional working “The process whereby members of different professions and/or agencies work together to provide integrated health and/or social care for the benefit of service users.” (Pollard et al 2005) Applies to all aspects of nursing social work and education Oxford Dictionary 2012 definition of intra-between among mutually reciprocal Presentation title

Interprofessional working in practice Children Act (2004): Section 10 and 11 outline the duty for local authorities organisation and individuals to cooperate effectively to promote child welfare (Legislation.gov.uk) Presentation title

Interprofessional working in practice contd Working together to safeguard children (HM Gov 2018): “ Effective sharing of information between practitioners and local organisations and agencies is essential for early identification of need, assessment and service provision to keep children safe”. Interprofessional working represented in professional codes e. g NMC 2015 and HCPC (2017) Interprofessional working promoted to improve mental health care in UK (Priest et al 2011 ) Presentation title

Serious Case Reviews (SCR) Problems with inter-professional communication and its impact upon decision making is a common theme in serious case reviews (SCRs).(NCPCC 2018) Failings in interprofessional working featured predominantly in enquiries into the death of Victoria Climibie and Baby P. (Laming 2003 and Bell and Allain 2010) , Hamzah Khan’s SCR (2013) highlights the practical difficulties that can lead to interprofessional practice not protecting the child “Workload pressure and contractual or commissioning arrangements can influence the capacity and focus of professional’s ability to respond to information or lack of engagement” (SCR Hamzah Khan Executive Summary 2013)

Interprofessional working-a complex set of skills Keys (2009) suggests that key skills involved in effective interprofessional communication related to safeguarding/child protection are: How easy is this really in practice? Being clear about own role Able to see the perspective of others Challenging others

Working interprofessionally: A real life view Each member of the panel will be asked to talk individually for 5 minutes on why in their view inter-professional working consistently features as an area of weakness in research and Serious Case Reviews You (the students) will then be invited to ask questions of the panel in relation to the points they have raised. Towards the end of the session the panel will then be asked to offer a 5 minute summary each of how they feel good inter-professional practice can be promoted in the future. Presentation title

Interprofessional symposium 10/10/18 Post session Work Interprofessional symposium 10/10/18

Completing the glossary After you have attended the session please look the definitions for any terms you have written on you glossary Think of how you can incorporate these terms in your future academic work and in your professional communication

Your experience Think about teams you have worked with and reflect on examples where interprofessional/ multidisciplinary/ multi-professional teams have worked well and examples where they have not What made the difference between one team working and the other not?

Post session work: contd Information sharing is often cited by practitioners as an area they are unclear over when working with other agencies. Please access the following HM Government guidance (2018) on information sharing https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/u ploads/attachment_data/file/721581/Information_sharing_advice_prac titioners_safeguarding_services.pdf Adult and mental health nurses may wish to see the information section (pg 14) of the NHS policy on Safeguarding children, young people or adults at risk of abuse. http://www.hampshiresab.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/Safeguarding- Adults-Roles-and-responsibilities-in-health-and-care-services.pdf From the reading above and using what was discussed in the session, please complete a reflection (using the model of your choice) to demonstrate what you have learnt and how this may influence your work in the future as part of a interprofessional/multiagency work force Please keep this post work and your reflection for evidence as part of your professional development portfolio Thank you for taking part!
