Sacred Heart Parish Sacrament of Reconciliation Sacrament of First Holy Communion Sacrament of Confirmation 19th February 2018

School Prayer – Father Campbell Thank you God for the gift of our school where we know we are loved and cared for Help us to work together To help one another To show respect and kindness to others To make visitors feel welcome And to pray for those who have no school St Andrew- pray for us

Watch over and protect them as they mature. Dear Lord, As we begin preparing our children for the Sacraments we thank you for the children You have entrusted to us. Watch over and protect them as they mature. Help them to grow closer to You and to realise that You are all they need to live a fulfilled life here on earth. Let Your light shine through us for them to see so that they may know that You are the way, the truth and the life. Thank You, Lord, for allowing us to be partners with You in nurturing our children. We offer these prayers through our Lord Jesus Christ who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever, Amen. Classroom Materials The materials for class teachers will guide the Religious Education programme in school during the period leading up to the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation. It is anticipated that this period will be around 5 weeks in length and there are 16 lessons in total. Each lesson has accompanying resources such as PowerPoints, video links, photocopy masters of games and activities and there is also a pupil workbook which they can annotate and keep. The class lessons are rooted in prayer and scripture. Each lesson is brought to a close through prayer and the pupils listen to and reflect on a variety of scripture passages. Art, drama and music are also widely used to bring the lessons to life for the pupils. There are also additional ‘Early Finisher Activities’ which the pupils can use to explore the lives of the saints and the Gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit.

Reconciliation Workbook Unique and made in God’s image Reflection Learning to say sorry Forgiveness God loves you and will forgive you

How can you support your child at home? Talk about times when your child has turned away from God Importance of saying sorry and showing forgiveness Take them to Mass and encourage participation of the Sacrament Prayer: establish habits of prayer as a family. In school the pupils will be learning two short prayers to the Holy Spirit, perhaps you could begin to pray these as a family during the preparation period. By regularly Participating in the sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Communion, you can help your child to prepare more fully to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Choosing a saint’s name: As you know, your child will be asked to choose a Confirmation name. This should be the name of a saint whose life provides an example of Christian living for your child. You can assist your child in selecting a Confirmation name by encouraging them to read short stories of the lives of the saints. It is important that the child should know something about the saint's life in order that they can relate to the saint and ask for the saint's help, not only during this time of preparation but also for the rest of their lives. Choosing a sponsor: When your child is confirmed they will need to have a Confirmation Sponsor. The sponsor will stand beside your child as they receive the sacrament and should continue to support your child, particularly in aspects relating to their faith. A sponsor should be; a practising, Confirmed Catholic; at least sixteen years of age; the child's Baptismal Godparent if possible; someone willing to help the child grow as a Christian; someone who will show the child, by their way of life, how to live as a Christian. While much of the preparation for the Sacraments of Initiation is focused on the child that is going to receive the sacrament it’s important to remember that it is a time of grace for the whole family. If you’ve been away from Church for a while, this is a great opportunity for you to come back and think about your own faith again and it goes without saying that the more involved the family is the more meaningful the experience is for the child. Your children are entering into the community of faith and they will be learning that that community of faith connects their family, their school and the Church. The workbook sessions and parish activities such as services of enrolment, catechesis etc. involve parents, catechists, teachers and priests working together to reinforce to the children that sense of community. The more you engage with the preparation process the more it will mean to your child, the more it will mean to your family and the more it will mean to your parish.

Archbishop Tartaglia Please encourage your child. Pray with them. Accompany them to Sunday Mass. Tell them what Jesus means to you. Don’t be afraid to share your own faith with them. They need to see that faith can be lived authentically in the modern world. They need the adults who love them to be role models in faith as in other things.
