Ag Fact of the Week If you watched the Super Bowl, you saw a by- product of cattle. Even though footballs are nicknamed “pigskin” they actually come from the hide of cattle. How many cattle did it take to supply all of the footballs needed for the NFL this year?

Review Questions What do the letters PPE Stand for? What are the three parts of the fire triangle? What do you yell before striking an arc? What is the black material left on the metal after welding? What two tools do you use to clean off metal after welding?

Review Questions 6. What color is the acetelyne Tank? 7. What color is the oxygen tank? 8. How far do we open the oxygen cylinder? 9. What pressure do we set the oxygen to? 10. How far do we open the acolyte cylinder?

Review Questions 11. Which color represents danger? 12. Which color represents safety? 13. Which color represents information? 14. Which color represents caution? 15. Which color represents warning? 16. What pressure do we set the acetylene to?

Classes of Fire Class A Class B Class C Class D Flammable Liquid Electrical Fires Combustible Metals Regular Combustible Materials

8 Steps to starting the torch _____________________________________________________

2 Methods to Starting a weld Tapping – Keep tapping the electrode on the metal until the arc is started Striking – Strike the electrode against the metal like striking a match

Keeping the Arc Welding is done by melting metal together. Once you’ve struck your arc, keeping moving the metal pool along until you are at the end of the metal

After Welding Once you are done welding, place the metal in water to cool it down Only pick it up with Pliers!!!!! Using your chipping hammer or wire brush, brush away all of the slag Slag is the black stuff that will be on top of your weld Slag makes your weld look bad and could make the metal weaker if you weld on it

After Welding Slag – black material covering the welding This can be cleaned off by: Chipping Hammer Wire Brush

Make Adjustments If you cant get the arc to start, turn up the metal If your metal is burning holes through it, its too hot and you need to turn it down!! Look to see if your going too fast or too slow

Good or Bad?

A Good Weld is… Even all the way across Straight Deep Penetration Strong – Wont Break

5 types of Welds

Types of Welds Butt Joint – to pieces of metal butted together

Types of Welds Corner Joint

Types of Welds Lap Joint

Types of Welds T Joint

Types of Welds Edge Joint

Good Housekeeping A clean shop will keep you clean and safe. We will sweep EVERY DAY!! Don’t sweep debris out the door!! Clean and put tools in their proper place. Take care of the Equipment.

General Safety Tips Use your head – Common Sense NO HORSEPLAY!!!!! Properly Fitting Clothes No Jewelry on you hands Keep Tools in proper working condition Sharp Tools are Safer that Dull Tools Use tools for the Job it was intended for

General Safety Tips Make sure you know how to use the tool If a tool breaks, Tell Mr. Branscum! Keep both hands behind the cutting edge Keep out of “Danger Zones” when not using a machine Don’t Bother anyone when they are working

General Safety Tips Store all Tools in a definite Place Don’t force Tools Don’t abuse Cords Secure your work Take Your time!!!!! No Art Work or Graffiti allowed!!

General Safety Tips Most Importantly – Pay Attention Stay Focused Don’t Goof Around Use your Head!

My Expectations of YOU Mature attitudes and behavior resulting in a safe shop. Work Hard Stay Busy Be a person of good character Be Respectful Realize that it is everyone’s job to keep the shop clean & safe. The shop is a place to be serious, it is not a playground.

Take Pride In Doing A Job Well We don’t turn out junk!!
