Biology Department 1. 2  The ear is the organ of hearing and, in mammals, balance.  In mammals, the ear is usually described as having three parts:
When a sound is made, the air around the sound vibrates. Hearing starts when some of the sound waves go into the ear.

I will be checking for questions and summaries on this page as well Copy the following onto a new sheet of paper: Page 25 EQ: What is the structure and function of the ear?

The Ear: Hearing and Balance The three parts of the ear are the inner, outer, and middle ear The outer and middle ear are involved with hearing The inner ear functions in both hearing and equilibrium Receptors for hearing and balance: Respond to separate stimuli Are activated independently

Outer Ear External auditory canal Tympanic membrane (eardrum) Short, curved tube filled with gland Tympanic membrane (eardrum) Thin membrane that vibrates Transfers sound energy to the middle ear

Middle Ear (Tympanic Cavity) A small, air-filled, mucosa-lined cavity Pharyngotympanic tube – connects the middle ear to the nasopharynx Equalizes pressure

Middle ear: Ossicles The tympanic cavity contains three small bones (ossicles) the malleus (hammer), incus (anvil), and stapes (stirrup) Vibrate when sound hits them
