“The Investigative Reporter”

The Scenario - Each group or individual will portray an investigative news reporter(s) similar to “60 Minutes” (an investigative report news program). The reporters will research an economic violation dealing with labor laws (i.e., poor working conditions, low wages) and environmental laws (i.e., littering, improper waste disposal, illegal pesticides in agriculture) within the last 10 years.

The Research Requirements 1 The Research Requirements 1. Research Paper (1000 words essay paper) to understand the specific violations on the project. Look at the essay format from the instructor's website for an example. 2. News Video (2-3 minutes) to report-out on the findings from the research paper (In order to get a grade, each person must be in the video and look professional when reporting-out. ). 3. Interview Video (2-3 minutes) Interview a responsible working adult that has some knowledge of the topics you selected (i.e., labor or environmental violation). 4. Interview questions that will be used in the interview. Use Microsoft Word and print a hard copy with 5-8 questions. The questions should address the following: - How do they feel about the violations? - How does it affect them or others? - What are some solutions to fix the violation? 5. Flowchart – Fill out the Violation/Effects/Solutions Flowchart (download and print the flowchart).

Research Paper (Bring a hard copy to class on the due date) The research paper should address the following questions: 1. What was the labor and environmental law that was broken? 2. Who was committing the violation (person, group of people, corporation)? 3. Where did the violations take place (country, state, city)? 4. When (must not be older than 5 years) did the violations take place? 5. Why is this report important? What are the repercussions if the violations continue? 6. What are some solutions to solve the problems (provide some solutions to the problem)?

Video (Two Parts) Part 1 – News Report Part 2 - Interview 1 Video (Two Parts) Part 1 – News Report Part 2 - Interview 1. Upload both videos to YouTube. Provide the instructor the YouTube link.
