Announcements Today we will be going over some new vocabulary for our upcoming unit. The guiding question for this unit will be: Why did Europeans colonize North America/Africa and not the other way around? New World Using your device, textbook, or dictionary, look up the term New World  Create a memory clue or use the word in a sentence   Definition:  A phrase which is typically used in reference to North and South America.  "New" because the Europeans were just discovering it. This is a map printed in 1540 depicting what was then understood to be North America.  Most notably it includes a mythical sea which cuts North America in half. This "sea", named after it's supposed discoverer Giovanni da Verrazano, was likely either the Chesapeake Bay or perhaps the Hudson River.

Columbian Exchange Using your device, textbook, or dictionary, look up the term Columbian Exchange Create a memory clue or use the word in a sentence   Definition:  A transfer of goods, ideas, and creatures between the Old and New Worlds cause by European explorers.

Mercantilism Using your device, textbook, or dictionary, look up the term Mercantilism  Create a memory clue or use the word in a sentence    Definition:  The economic idea that wealth equaled power and that nations should be self sufficient.
