9-11- Facts: KEY VOCABULARY: Terrorism: violent acts intended to create fear, targets are usually non-military civilians Osama bin Laden: person responsible for organizing and funding 9-11 attacks Pentagon: headquarters of U.S. Department of Defense, located in Northern Virginia World Trade Center: group of 7 buildings in NYC, included the Twin Towers; financial hub Al-Qaeda: Terrorist group lead by bin Laden

9-11-01 Facts 4 Terrorist Acts happened: 1. 1st plane WTC North Tower-8:46 (around 50,000 people work there) 2. 2nd plane hit WTC South Tower- 9:03 3. Plane hit Pentagon in DC- 9:37 4. Hijacked plane crashed in field in PA. (plane’s destination was either the Capitol Building or White House)

WHO DID THIS? Osama bin Laden & Al-Qaeda (a terrorist network) responsible- recruited 19 Hijackers to take planes. Men trained in Afghanistan, but from many Middle Eastern countries (Saudi Arabia 15 of 19, Egypt, Lebanon, UAE)

Why did Al-Qaeda Do This? Extremist- a person who holds extreme political or religious views and acts on them Al Qaeda- Islamic EXTREMIST organization- hated American way of life/values Wanted ALL US military out of Middle East

9-11: A National Day of Service After 9-11-01, people came from all over the U.S. to help in anyway they can, those affected by this tragedy. It’s a day to remember those innocent people who lost their lives and those who lost loved ones. Why is this topic of service to community and giving back particularly relevant to your community of Denville today? For extra credit throughout the year, do something kind (random act of kindness) for someone or volunteer to help someone (or organization).
