What is a World’s Fair? A world's fair, world fair, world exposition, or universal exposition (sometimes expo or Expo for short) is a large international exhibition designed to showcase achievements of nations. These exhibitions vary in character and are held in different parts of the world. World's fairs originated in the French tradition of national exhibitions, a tradition that culminated with the French Industrial Exposition of 1844 held in Paris. This fair was followed by other national exhibitions in continental Europe and the United Kingdom. The best-known 'first World Expo' was held in The Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, London, United Kingdom, in 1851, under the title "Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations". The Great Exhibition, as it is often called, The most recent international exhibition, Expo 2017, was held in Astana, Kazakhstan. Slides 8-14 are background knowledge about world’s fairs and may be skipped if desired.

History of the Fairs The first era could be called the era of "industrialization" and covered, roughly, the period from 1800 to 1938. In these days, world expositions were especially focused on trade, and were famous for the display of technological inventions and advancements. World expositions were the platforms where the state-of-the-art in science and technology from around the world were brought together. The fairs encouraged effective intercultural communication for the exchange of innovation. List of where they have been hosted: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_world_expositions Older students pick a fair. Research it and make a poster to present to rest of the class. Hosting a world’s fair Each city that wants to host a fair must “go to bid” to prove why they deserve to host the fair. They must come up with a proposal and a theme for the event The United States has not hosted a fair in over 40 years. Minnesota put a bid to host the next world’s fair, but lost to Buenos Aires Day 3

Healthy People, Healthy Planet Our World’s Fair Theme: Healthy People, Healthy Planet We will be borrowing Minnesota’s theme, “Healthy People, Healthy Planet”, for our own fair

Task Create an invention or idea that can be used to help people become healthier or make the earth healthier. 5th grade- Healthy People or Healthy Planet

Research Research problems that are making people unhealthy Make a KWL chart about what they know and want to know. Use texts to help learn more.

Research Learning Scale 1 2 3 4 Researching using multiple sources is a new skill for me, and I still need help to complete my tasks. Draw on information from a print or digital sources, but needed help demonstrating the ability to locate an answer to a question quickly or to solve a problem efficiently. AND Integrate information from several texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject knowledgeably

Organize your Research Know (What do you already know about your topic?) Wondering (What questions do you have about your topic?) Learned (through your research what did you learn about your topic?)

Write up Write up your findings. What is something that is keeping the world/humans from being healthy.

Learning Goal: Students will write an explanatory essay explaining a problem they found that is keeping Humans/Earth from being Healthy. 1 2 3 4 Did not complete explanatory text. The explanatory text examines a topic and conveys ideas and information clearly. It may be missing some of the following: Introduces a topic clearly. Develops the topic with facts. Uses precise language and domain-specific vocabulary. Provides a concluding statement or section related to the information or explanation presented. Come Up with a Plan Now that you have identified what is making the Earth/Humans unhealthy, what can you create to help improve that issue? Pick one

The ONE Pick one idea form the brainstorming that can realistically be created.

Blueprint Outline and/or picture describing your project.

Create Model

Write it up Start your essay: What is your object? What will it do? How will it fix the problem?
