The scarlet ibis is native to the tropical regions of northern South America from Venezuela to eastern Brazil and coastal islands. They inhabit fresh and salt water estuaries, swamps, lagoons, shallow bays, marshes, mud flats, and mangrove trees. List three details you notice in the picture.

WORLD WAR I

First two paragraphs Underline all the negative words in the first two paragraphs. Circle all the words associated with death.

DICTION( ADD TO TAB 3) Diction is the choice and use of words and phrases in speech or writing. List two inferences that can be made by studying the diction of these two paragraphs. The diction creates a sense of ___________________and ____________________ because________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Active Reading As you read you will answer various literary questions. We will pause to answer and discuss. You should divide the front and back of your paper into 10 sections As we read you should first read questions and record page numbers in box. If you discover the answer to a question while reading, mark with a Post-It-Note to come back during the pause or write down the page number only.

Section 1 pages 384-385 The first two paragraphs are an example of flashback. Provide three examples from the paragraph to support. From what point of view is the story told? Identify the exposition of the story. Provide two similes that describe William Armstrong. The narrator states, “For the first time he became one of us.” Explain the statement’s meaning.

Section 2 386-387 Provide three words that best describe Doodle. Provide three examples to support your answer. Summarize the relationship between the narrator and his brother. “There was within me a knot of cruelty borne with the stream of love, much as our blood sometimes bears the seed of our destruction, and at times I was mean to Doodle.” This sentence is an example of what literary term? Explain.

Pages 388-389 How do the narrator’s and Doodle’s ideas about learning how to walk differ? What probably causes the difference? “I did not then that pride is a wonderful, terrible thing, a seed that bears two vines, life and death.” Explain the quote. What type of literary term is being used in the quote? “Aunt Nicey said that, after so much talk, if we produced anything less tremendous than the Resurrection, she was going to be disappointed.” What type of literary term is being used? How have the narrator’s feelings changed since the story began? Provide two traits to describe the narrator so far. Explain your answer.

Pages 390-391 How does the second paragraph’s mood differ from the mood of the rest of the story? Explain. How do the events in the paragraph affect the narrator and Doodle? “And during that summer, strange names were heard through the house; Chateau –Thierry, Amiens, Soissons…” This sentence is an example of what literary term? Explain. “…we had both wandered into a net of expectations and had left no crumbs behind.” Explain the meaning What creates suspense in the following passage: “ Suddenly, from out in the yard, came a strange croaking noise. Doodle stopped eating, with a piece of bread poised ready for his mouth, his eyes popped round like two blue buttons.” Why is the appearance of the scarlet ibis in their yard strange?

Pages 392-393 Describe the traits of the bird. Which character is the bird similar? How? Why do you think the bird traveled all this way to die in the family’s yard? Why do you think that Doodle decides to bury the scarlet ibis? “Dead birds is bad luck”, said Aunt Nicey. What bad luck might Doodle encounter ? How has the setting’s atmosphere at Horsehead landing changed?

Page 394-395 The storm is considered to be what part of plot? Why would a violent storm be a great signal for a story’s crisis? Why does the narrator first run away and then wait for his brother?
