How do we learn? Through small group, creative drama, music and technology. By seeing the end and then exploring the many different learning styles and ways to get there. We believe in getting the kids up and moving and working in small groups. It promotes healthy learning and teaches them how to cooperate and manage time. we also like the kids to see that there is more than one way to get where we are going and it might be different for each of us, and that is ok!

How you can help at home Please help your child remember to read for 20 minutes each night. This will help with many things such as, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension but it also helps them build stamina! When they finish, ask them higher level thinking questions and pick out 2 to 3 new vocabulary words and define them. Examples of higher level thinking questions are: What is the author’s purpose? How do you know? Give 3 details to support your answer. Based on your reading, what conclusions can you draw about the main character? What would you have done in this situation? Why? What is the overall theme? (Heart of the message) Give 3 details to support your answer. Have them look for the sign posts from, Notice and Note, that we have worked on.

How can you help at home, cont. Choral read with your child. Read a paragraph out loud together with one steady pace being kept. This is an excellent way to build strong fluency. Be sure to model proper pauses at commas, and giving voice to characters Practice GIST and Author’s Portrait with your child. GIST helps your child with summarization by them only using 5 words to summarize a reading passage or paragraph. Author’s portrait helps your child with comprehension by having them recall details and drawing them in a silhouette of a head. If you have access to the Internet at home, please allow your child to log onto Education Galaxy for reading and use www.quizlet.com, to practice spelling and vocabulary for both reading and science.

How can you help at home, cont. Math facts- students should be practicing their math facts regularly at home. Coming in to 5th grade students should know their multiplication facts through 12 x 12. They will have a math facts quiz every Friday over Multiplication and then eventually Division as well. Science Vocabulary- Students receive the words the Friday before and are given time in class to make vocabulary flashcards. Students are expected to student their science vocabulary each night. They will have a Science Vocabulary quiz every Friday. At the end of 4 weeks of quizzes they will have a big cumulative test over their prior words, which they can use their flashcards on if they have them. Quizizz and Kahoot- I will be sharing links to various Quizizz and Kahoots reviews through my Smore newsletter.

Discipline :/ Every Friday, or as the occasion arises, we have a class meeting to discuss any issues or concerns we are having as a family and then as a family we come up with solutions. On occasion students may need to walk a lap or two at recess for different reasons. Taking too long to settle down, talking during instruction, off task, etc.

Always With A Roar (Yes, I’m making Mrs. Schluter roar with me!), As always, it is a great honor and privilege for us to be your child’s teacher. We are passionate about education, and we are completely dedicated to doing what we can to make sure that each and every one of your children is successful. We are not only here for your children, but we are also here for your families. Thank you for entrusting us with your precious gifts each and every day. Always With A Roar (Yes, I’m making Mrs. Schluter roar with me!), Mrs. Blackman & Mrs. Schluter :)
