Chapter 5 Changes on the Western Frontier Section 1 Section 2 Section 3 Assignment

Section 1: Cultures Clash on the Prairie Dawes Act “Americanize” Native Americans Broke up reservations and gave some of the reservation land to individual Native Americans 160 acres to each head of household 80 acres to each unmarried adult Remainder of reservation land would be sold to settlers=income would be used by Native Americans to buy farm implements. Effect: By 1932 whites had taken 2/3 of land reserved for Native Americans, and received no $ from the land.

B. The Battle of Wounded Knee Ritual called “ghost dance”, believed if they (Native Americans) performed it, land would be restored to them. Spread through the Dakota reservation Sitting Bull was ordered to be arrested, (Dec. 1890) His bodyguard shot one of the police-they killed Sitting Bull

December 20, 1890 The 7th Cavalry (Kuster’s old regiment) rounded up 350 suffering Sioux and took them to a camp at Wounded Knee Creek, SD. Demanded the Sioux give up their weapons. Shot was fired (unsure of who fired it) They killed over 300 Sioux; men, women, and children, and left them to freeze on the ground. Brought and end to the Indian wars. Home

Section 2: Settling on the Great Plains Transcontinental Railroad Union Pacific (westward from Omaha) Irish immigrants, Civil War veterans, African Americans Central Pacific (eastward from Sacramento) Chinese, Mexican immigrants Land grants for these companies 10 square miles of land=1 mile of track laid. (state) 20 square miles of land=1 mile of track laid. (territory). May 10, 1869 both companies met in Promontory, Utah

B. Homestead Act 160 acres of land to any citizen who was head of household. Have to live on the land for 5 years. Only 10% of land actually went to families (those it was intended for) Not all plots were equal value Midwest regions it worked well Dryer regions (west) farmers needed more land to farm Home

Section 3: Farmers and the Populist Movement Populism: the movement of the people. A. Populist party platform Increased $ supply Graduated income tax Federal loan program Voting reform 8 hour workday

B. Panic of 1893 Causes: Results: Railroads went bankrupt Governments gold supply ran thin Prices of stocks fell drastically Results: Consumer purchases, wages and prices fell. By 1894 20% of population was unemployed.

C. End of Populism William McKinley’s election in 1896 put an end to populism Movement left two powerful legacies The downtrodden could organize and have political impact. An agenda of reforms that would be enacted in the 20th century. Home
