Persuasive Essay Prompt Recently, a citizen’s group proposed a change to the rules for obtaining a driver’s license. The group has proposed that high school students have at least a “B” average in order to get a driver’s license. Take a position on this proposal. Write a letter to the editor of your local paper to persuade voters to agree with your position.

Introduction Learning Targets I can select my favorite type of introduction and use it on the HSPE Persuasive Essay. I can craft 5-7 sentences that clearly demonstrate my introduction style. I can craft a thesis with my clearly stated position and my 3 points to prove it.

Learning Targets for Persuasive Body Paragraphs 1 and 2 I can craft a topic sentence that includes my arguable point and how I will prove that point in the paragraph. I can craft a fake quote or statistic that supports my thesis statement. I can craft a rhetorical question that persuades the reader to agree with my position. I can craft a hypothetical example that demonstrates why my opinion is correct.

Learning Targets for Persuasive Body Paragraph #3 I can brainstorm one point that the opposition might bring up to prove their opinion is true. I can decide what their point fails to consider/acknowledge/ or prove . I can point out detailed problems in the opposition’s viewpoint. I can offer a solution that works as a compromise between our two ways of thinking.

Conclusion Learning Targets I can begin with an advanced transition word. I can restate my thesis. I can summarize each point I made in one sentence per point. I can use transitional phrases that help my writing flow from point to point. I can end with a call to action.
