Web Development Standards 4.01 Examine web page development and design.

Developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and others What are web standards? Basic set of rules for authoring and scripting languages used to make web pages Developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and others

What is the W3C? The W3C is a member organization. Some well known members include: IBM Microsoft America Online Apple Adobe Sun Microsystems

The W3C and Web Standards The W3C is working to make the web accessible to all users (despite differences in culture, education, ability, resources, and physical limitations).

Advantages of Standards Consistency in all browsers Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and other browsers display the web site exactly the same way. Faster site development Faster download of site

Advantages of Standards continued Equal access to information Differences in browser and/or operating system versions do not limit the user’s access to the site. Differences in hardware do not limit the user’s access to the site. Computer PDA Cell phone

Disadvantages of Standards Restricts development Web authors who want to use new technologies are prevented from doing so. User systems may not be compatible with the software or hardware required by the new technologies. Not essential Slows innovation

Section 508 Amendment to Rehabilitation Act Federal employees with disabilities must be able to use information and data that is comparable to information and data used by Federal employees who are not individuals with disabilities. Members of the public who have disabilities and are seeking information or services from a US Federal agency, have access to and use of information and data that is comparable to that provided to the public who are not individuals with disabilities
