The Legislative Branch

Legislative branch serves as a connection between the citizens and government Our government is called a representative democracy Government by representatives of the people

The term Congress is an all encompassing term The term Congress is an all encompassing term. Congress is made up of two houses: House of Representatives Senate

House of Representatives Number of representatives is set at 435 members A state can increase membership only if another state decreases membership This apportionment (distribution of members) is done every ten years after the census is taken the government uses a formula to establish how this is done, if membership is still done by the ratio of 1 to 30,000 people, the house of representatives would have 10,000 members!

Requirements to be a house member? Age 25 yrs old Citizenship U.S. citizen for 7 or more yrs. Residency Must live in the state of which you wish to represent Term Two year (unlimited)

Requirements to be a member of the Senate? Age 30 yrs old Citizenship U.S. citizen for 9 or more years Residency Must live in the state of which you wish to represent Term Six year term (unlimited)
