Four Leadership Lessons PACRAO 2018 Sacramento, CA October, 2018

As You Are Settling In Sit nearby at least one person you don’t know well. Take a couple of deep centering breaths and set a clear intention for today. Think about the following questions: as a leader, I am most challenged by… I am most energized by…

Four Leadership Lessons James Miller Director of Admissions UW Bothell

Our Goals Today Connect new colleagues. React to ideas presented through a stimulating dialog about the work of Leadership. Think about taking away something you can implement that will make your and your team’s daily work better.

Leadership is WORK Story about growing up on a farm, in farm life. Never thought that the world of the farm would translate to the world of work. Working on a farm is: A mixture of ongoing maintenance and effort with new projects. Never ending, never slowing. Requires consistent effort Leadership is work.

Four Leadership Lessons The Most Important Thing Candor Start With Why Do The Thing

Connect Partner up with someone in the room who you do not know well, or at all. Introductions Share: what aspects of leadership are most draining? Most energizing? The problem I am trying to solve right now is…

Discussion

The Most Important Thing

The key is not to prioritize what’s on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities. - Stephen Covey

As a new leader, one of the first lessons you learn is that your schedule is no longer your own.

But what did I ACCOMPLISH?

Productive > Busy

Your mind is precious real estate. Guard it.

Most Important Things Turn off notifications on all devices. Especially those Outlook popups! Answer email in purposeful shifts rather than constant responding. Take breaks

Reflection

Most Important Things Prior to starting the day, ask yourself: what is the thing that must be accomplished to make today successful? Write it down. Eliminate obstacles.

Most Important Things www.bulletjournal.com

Most Important Things Jesuit Examen Set an intention for “light” to be cast upon the events of the day. Give thanks (be specific) Review the events of the day Acknowledge where you came up short Plan for tomorrow

Most Important Things Staff meetings using MIT Work to eliminate meetings that have no purpose. Do we need to gather for updates? Encourage mindfulness on your team

Candor

Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth.  --The Buddha

Complete this sentence: If you can’t say anything nice…

Radical Candor

Radical Candor

Radical Candor

The Power of Feedback Good feedback is: Timely and specific Candid and from a place of personal care Free of generalities or platitudes Three positive for every one negative Focused on improvement

Start with “Why?”

Start with Why

The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows.  -Sydney J. Harris

Do the Thing.

A leader's job is not to do the work for others, it's to help others figure out how to do it themselves, to get things done, and to succeed beyond what they thought possible.  -Simon Sinek

Do The Thing Don’t delegate. Empower. Use a strengths based approach to put team members into roles that fit their skills and create permission to produce. Remember Leadership IS work

Live and breathe by the Rule of The 80%

Create a culture of action.

Don’t let the great be the enemy of the good.

Take care of yourself.
