Miss Peregrine’s home for Peculiar Children: By Ransom Riggs A Book Report By Cavan Slade

Summary Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children revolves around young teen named Jacob Portman and the adventure he enters to resolve many mysteries caused by the death of his grandfather. This adventure leads to the discovery Cairnholm, a place his grandfather called home during his youth. Jacob uncovers many secrets involving his grandfather, the supposed safe haven and incoming disaster. This amazing story involves many intriguing plot twists, unsettling photographs an one choice that may break your heart.

Jacob Portman Jacob Portman is the main protagonist of this story, a young teen who’s grandfather was killed by a monster from his own “fairy tales.” The death causes Jacob to travel to a welsh island in order to resolve many unanswered questions.

Abraham Portman Abe dies early in the story however he remains an important part as the inspiration for Jacob's adventures and Emma’s ex-boyfriend.

Millard Nullings Millard Nullings is one of the peculiar children. He is invisible except for his clothing. Millard is interested in documenting every little think that happens on September 3 1940. He is Jacob’s first friend upon entering the loop.

Emma Bloom Emma Bloom is Jacob’s best friend, although they become more than that as the book progresses. Emma had a very close relationship with Abe while he was in the loop. Emma is initially very suspicious of Jacob calling him “Wright” on many occasions.

Miss Peregrine Miss Peregrine is the leader of a home for “peculiar” children she maintains the “September 3 1940” Loop. She is a ymbryne therefor she can transform into a Peregrine Falcon and has limited control over time.

Carinholm, Whales This island is the setting for this story, both in 1940 and the present day. This island is home to a small fishing community. The island is completely covered in fog except for the only town and a tattered mansion atop the hill. In 1940 however, the island is fogless and the mansion is in perfect condition. The entrance to the loop is in a small crypt underground in the fog.

The Ymbrynes’ fear The climax of this story involves another Ymbryne (Miss Finch) arriving on Cairnholm bringing news of an incoming threat of an army of Hollowgasts coming to end the peculiars. The Hollows are lead by a wright who enters the loop to kidnap the two Ymbrynes. The story ends with all of Miss Peregrine’s peculiars leaving the loop to save her.

My Opinion This is one of the best books I have ever read. The text and the photographs complement each other beautifully to draw you in and create an amazing environment. The plot twists create an amazing air of suspense to captivate the reader. I believe this book is deserving of a 5/5 and I recommend this amazing story to anyone willing to be scared, brought almost to tears and completely surprised.
