Snail Mail Using the post office to send a message

Advantages Fast Free Can include the original message Can be tracked Don’t have to go anywhere

Disadvantages Not Private—Anyone can hack or view if going to a business or through a firewall Need to have a computer Easy to send to the wrong person Can be tracked Viruses Spam

Important E-Mail Terms

Account Provides the rights to a storage area or mailbox.

How to Make an Attachment

Using this button will pass this e-mail on to whomever you specify Forward Using this button will pass this e-mail on to whomever you specify

Reply Answering an e-mail

Address Book Area of e-mail program that keeps e-mail addresses and other information such as name, address, phone numbers, etc.

CC Carbon Copy Sends an exact copy of the e-mail to another person or persons.

BCC Blind Carbon Copy Prevents people who receive the same e-mail from seeing the other recipient’s addresses or names

--Spam-- Internet Junk Mail To indiscriminately send unsolicited, unwanted, irrelevant, or inappropriate messages, especially commercial advertising in mass quantities.

Flaming Sending angry or inflammatory messages Tommy is illiterate and hates broccoli

Phishing Using an e-mail hoax to obtain information. This is especially true when trying to steal your identity.

Hoax An untruthful e-mail message sent to get a response or action from the reader.

Hoax Red Flag #1 “Send it to everyone you know” If it were a real story, you would probably send it only want those who know you.

Hoax Red Flag #2 Technical sounding language "...if the program is not stopped, the computer's processor will be placed in an nth-complexity infinite binary loop which can severely damage the processor..." Using words that lead you to believe the sender knows what they are talking about.

Hoax Red Flag #3 Credibility by Association If the janitor at a large technological organization sends a warning to someone outside of that organization, people on the outside tend to believe the warning because the company should know about those things and the janitor may know better than you do.

Hoax Red Flag #4 Spelling or Grammatical Errors This is especially true if the “sender” is representing a large company. They pay people to make sure there are no grammatical or spelling errors

Netiquette Customs or guidelines for maintaining civilized communication

Guidelines for Good E-mail Don’t type everything in all capital letters.

+ Be concise so your messages will be read and not just discarded. Short-N-Sweet Be concise so your messages will be read and not just discarded. +

Break it Up! Use short paragraphs for easier reading on a monitor.

Leave a blank line between paragraphs for easier reading on a monitor. See…doesn’t that make it easier to read. Compare it to this and that and everything all bunched together and small and it is just too much work to read so I am going to quit now because it makes me tired and I really don’t care what it says or means or anything

Sound Smart! Proofread and spell-check your e-mail before sending.

Let Them Know… Provide a meaningful subject line that introduces your message.

Chill a While… Don’t send messages out of anger because you can’t retract the message once it is sent.
