Koristi se za opis radnje koja je duže trajala u prošlosti He was playing computer games.

ako su se dve radnje istovremeno odvijale u prošlosti He was playing computer games while she was watching TV.

ako je jedna radnja bila u toku a druga je prekinula (onda se desila) He was watching TV when Tom arrived.

POTVRDNI OBLIK gradi se pomoćnim glagolom WAS/WERE i glagol dobije nastavak –ING.

 WAS/WERE V1+ING I was going we were going You were going you were going He was going they were going She was going It was going

UPITNI OBLIK gradi se inverzijom pomoćnog glagola i subjekta.

WAS/WERE  V1+ing Was I going? Were we going? Were you going? Were you going? Was he going? Were they going? Was she going? Was it going?

ODRIČNI OBLIK gradi se dodavanjem not posle pomočnog glagola.
