Quiz When your quiz is finished, review Chapter 6 WS to get ready for Group Discussion

Get your posters! + Check-plus Check Check-minus - X ?

Not all REASONING is equally convincing! Some arguments are flawed from the start, regardless of the amount of quotes / commentary you provide.

Who Gets the Blame? Reasonable arguments: Ralph Jack Group of Boys

Who Doesn’t Get the Blame? Mulberry Boy Piggy

No Piggy! The specs do NOT cause the fire; you’re basically blaming the sun The idea of a fire itself isn’t a bad one Piggy OBJECTS

Blame Game Discussion If someone has a good idea, like Ralph’s idea to have a signal fire on the mountain, how responsible is that person for things going terribly wrong? How much do you hold a leader accountable for what happens on his or her watch? For instance, in Chapter 4, when the signal fire goes out, how much of that is Ralph’s fault? When something negative happens as a result of a large group, how much responsibility falls on followers? To what extent should we be expected to think for ourselves? Most people wouldn’t blame a two year old for setting the house on fire, but we would blame a 20 year old for the same action. At what age should we hold ourselves accountable for our actions and inactions? To what extent do you blame the adult world for the disappearance of the boy? If you were to reconsider this, what percentage of the blame do they have for his disappearance?

Ch. 6 Quote WS You have 5 minutes. 2 minutes per quote. Each person should start off a different quote.

Symbol: Parachute Man How is it described (in Golding’s words)? What do we associate with it? Which of these seem relevant to the symbol’s meaning? Jot down single words it could possibly represent. You’ll make a decision later in the book.
