What was the time period called during the 1930s? The Great Depression

What was the 19th Amendment? This amendment gave women the right to vote.

When did the stock market crash? October 29, 1929; It was also called Black Tuesday

When factories did not produce more, what happened to jobs? With no work needed, people lost their jobs which caused an increase in unemployment.

What happened as a result of the stock market crashing? The economy suffered, unemployment increased, and many lost their homes. The price of stock decrease and became almost worthless over-night.

What was the Dust Bowl? Where did it occur? Who was affected? A period of severe dust storms that greatly damaged the ecology and agriculture. It occurred in the Great Plains. It was caused by farmers over producing on the land, and by a severe drought.

What were the causes of the Great Depression? People buying stock on credit or on margin, problems on farms that caused foreclosures, bank closures , and a slowing economy and loss of jobs due to the crash of the stock market. It was begun with the crash of the Stock Market on Black Tuesday.

When Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected president, why did the people elect him? Roosevelt promised to create government programs to help people. He is credited with creating the New Deal.

Who was Henry Ford? What changes to manufacturing did he do that contributed to the economic boom? Henry Ford created the popular Model-T automobile with interchangeable car parts as well as an assembly line process. As a result, cars were less expensive.

Who was Duke Ellington? A jazz pianist and composer, led his ten-piece orchestra at the famous Cotton Club. He created a jazz movement called Big Bands.

Who was Margaret Mitchell? A famous woman writer of the 30’s who wrote the novel Gone with the Wind

Who was Jesse Owens? Owens earned four gold medals at the 1936 Olympic games in Berlin. This made him the most remembered African American athlete in Olympic history.

How did Hoover and FDR differ in their beliefs on how to take the U. S How did Hoover and FDR differ in their beliefs on how to take the U.S. out of the Depression? Hoover wanted no government involvement. He believed government should stay out of business. FDR wanted government programs to help support struggling Americans. (The New Deal)

What happened to people’s money in their savings accounts during the Great Depression? People lost their money when banks failed. This was because banks invested in the stock market and people panicked and wanted their money out of the banks at the same time. They could not get their savings from the banks when banks failed and were forced to close.

It was focused on Reform, Relief, and Recovery. What was the New Deal? Legislation or laws designed to provide assistance to Americans during the Depression. It was focused on Reform, Relief, and Recovery.

What happened to jobs as an effect of the New Deal? Many jobs were created; jobs increased in the United States

What is the CCC? The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a work program for young men aged 18-25 years old. This organization built roads, parks, and other public services.

What is the WPA? The Works Progress Administration hired teachers, artists, musicians and writers to teach classes, create posters, write songs, and write books. (The Arts) They also built parks, roads, and other government buildings.

Who migrated out of the Dust Bowl and why? People like the “Okies” migrated out of the Midwest. Often, they went to California to work as migrant laborers on farms. Many of them were farmers from Oklahoma.

What is the Social Security Act? An act or law to provide for the elderly by establishing a system of Federal old-age benefits, retirement for the elderly. You had to be 65 years old to receive this benefit.

What is the TVA? What states did it affect? What did it do? The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) was created to bring electricity to the South and create jobs. They did this by building many dams in the Tennessee River Valley. States that received electricity from the TVA were Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky, Virginia, and North Carolina.

What is debt? Owing money

What is charity? An organization set up to provide help and raise money for those in need. During the Depression people in need went to soup kitchens and stood in bread lines to get help to feed their families.

The minimum amount a person can be paid. What is minimum wage? The minimum amount a person can be paid.
