What informs this landscape Only about 20% of HDR students will be able to find employment in academia Recent sectorial reviews (ACOLA, WATT ) and govt reviews have investigated HDR training, funding and employment Key relevant findings that all Australian Universities are now implementing: Unis need to be better at recognising and providing different entry and exit pathways for HDRs HDR students struggle to articulate their skills for non-academic audiences and employers Unis need to deliver transferrable skills development throughout HDR candidature Unis need to be better at providing HDRs with industry engagements and skills that will support a transdisciplinary and end-user focus Unis will be measured by the government on how often students engage with and complete these learning opportunities (HEIMS) What informs this landscape
What else do I need to do or know?
“ These skills will always be needed regardless of what job or research project you are doing” “Students need to realise this is important for their future – I got a job/internship in the US because of this training” “If you spend 1 hr on social media or checking emails each week, then you have time to do this training” Meriem, QUT PhD student about to leave for an internship in a company in USA Why do it?
